Transmission woes - 1 and 2 work, 3 and OD don't

drain pan
remove filter
remove tcc solenoid
remove pump
(you may have to remove the servo pin to allow the band to relax. At worst you would have to remove the valve body.)
remove reverse input drum
remove input drum
3/4 frictions and steels are the first thing you see when you turn the drum over.
remove snap ring, selective backing plate, frictions, steels, selective steels, and selective apply plate.
Install new everything dry and set clearance. OEM calls for .060-.080 but I run on the tighter side.
once clearance is set soak frictions in clean atf.
install new pump seal while you're in there.
assembly is reverse of removal

Piece of cake

Ah hell, all these years I thought it was a complicated thing....:doah::bow:

Yeah, for someone that's done it a few to several times, or does it all the time, it's super easy, for someone who has never pulled a trans apart, i would not do it unless you had someone there with the proper tools for the job, and adequate knowledge on how and what to remove and in what order.

I know they are suppose to be easy transmissions, but i once tried to pull a th350 apart, got half way into it, realized i didn't have all the right tooling for the job, and the more i dug into it, the more parts there seemed to be breeding in there, so i gave it up before i got too involved with it and took it to a trans shop.

Just my opinion, a transmission is definately NOT beginner territory for automitive work, i can pretty well tear anything else apart and put it back together on a vehicle, but the trans is always left for the pros. Too much that can go wrong during a reassembly of one to take the risk for the amount of work involved in my opinion. :smile1:

Before you go the rebuild route, did you check to make sure the Throttle Valve Cable was set properly?

I thought my 700r4 was toast but after putting on a new TV cable all was good.

On mine, the plastic retainer that connects to the TBI had become brittle and broke. I was getting 1st and 2nd but no up shift to 3rd.

Now when I get to about 50 mph and it shifts into third gear it just disconnects and the motor revs. If I manually switch down to 2nd gear and keep it there everything is fine, but obviously I can't go much faster than 55 mph.

Not the TV cable...

Man, you had me hoping it was a simple fix for a second there! Boo! Hiss! :haha:
