Maybe a stupid question but I won't know if I don't ask.

I just received a new HD tie rod from ORD and was wondering what you guys thought would be the best route to take. heim joints or tie rod ends.

What are the advantages of heims over TRE's? or TRE's over heims?

If I go with the heims then do I need to use the cone spacers? I have attached a picture to show what I am talking about.

Does anyone have a picture of a setup using heims?

Thanks,

Jason

i would probably go with TRE's....that is what your knuckle was machined for (as it is tapered)....hiem joints tend to squeek when not properly lubricated....also there is no real advantage with heims over TRE's in a TIEROD application....heims are for links and SOMETIMES a draglink (i would still go with a TRE on a draglink)....anyway, the only time i would go with heims over TRE's in a TIEROD application is if you made your own hysteer arms and you just drilled a straight hole that was not tapered.... just my 2 pasos..... :D

Most people who use heims in their steering drill out the hole in the knuckle so its no longer tapered and then mount the heim in single shear. That tends to eventually make that that hole oval shaped and ruin that part of the knuckle. Plus heims don't last anywhere near as long as a TRE.

Use a TRE.

it comes down to this. TRE's are designed to work in single shear like almost all steering applications are. heims are not designed for single shear and will eventually get loose and break. think about the surface area that receives the clamping force. with a heim and straight bolt, you only have the surface area of the side of the heim against the top of the steering arm, and the bottom of the steering arm against the washer/nut. with a TRE, since it is tapered, you have that whole area where it is tapered as surface area for the clamping force. so unless you have double shear, go with a TRE.

beat me to it.

TRE. Most parts stores will have a replacement when you need it. Vers having to wait for it to be shipped to you.

OK, it's settled, TRE's. That is the information I was looking for. Thanks guys.
