Depends on what your using now. Its really just a short non stretchy strap.
If you have extra straps, I dont really see the point of it. i've used the extra long straps plenty o times.

If you have a winch and a snatch block then by all means a tree saver is nice.
I have a strap that is like 8" tall and about 4' long.. has metal triangles on the ends.... need to pickup a shackle to hook them together.... that is my tree saver.... not sure what it is from though...
