I will try not to bore you with all the details but we need some history on the truck first. My grandfather (who passed away about a year ago) was a farmer all his life. My dad and his brothers and sister grew up farming. Actually, my dad is the only sibling that does not farm full time but just has some hay and vegetables.

Anyway, we have been cleaning out the farm because the siblings agreed to sell it. Hauling scrap and dividing everything up. Just like most farmers the back field is where they parked the equipment that broke or they didn't use any more. My uncle tells me there is an early 50s Chevy truck in the other back field. He thinks a 1954? Straight 6 with a 3 speed. The bed was rigged up with a hydraulic cylinder and setup to dump. They used it to haul grain and corn.

I asked why it got parked. He said because one day it wouldn't start and they got tired of fixing it so they towed it back there and parked it. He said I could have it if I wanted it and I set off to find it this afternoon.

Unfortunately this is what I found:

Apparently in all the ice and snow we got this winter a limb broke off and destroyed it. The truck was pretty rough before the limb fell on it. Now almost all of the glass was broken and the passenger side cab pushed down a foot or so. Hood and passenger fender mangled too. I did not get too many pics because it was swarming with bees.

I decided to leave the truck to rust in peace (mainly because its location would make removal tricky and the bees) but not before snagging one of those sweet "Chevrolet" hubcaps.

Don't worry it is just sitting there for the pic. I already hung it above my workbench.

Too bad about the truck. I think even without the tree, it would have been a hard save just based on the rust I can see though. I love the hubcaps though. That old school art deco font is killer.

Yeah it would have been hard to save even without the tree. Lots of rust.

I couldn't resist grabbing that hubcap. Wish there were more but that was the only one on the truck.

A shame, despite the tree crushing it,rough as it is,there is still some worth there for parts believe it or not though...the drivers side door looks useable maybe,or the handle at least...I'm sure there's someone restoring one somewhere who'd love to have it ,even if all they got was some small trinkets off it..

probably still some parts worth pulling, glass door handles, interior stuff, shifter knobs etc. then maybe haul the remainder off for scrap.:dunno:

Yeah I plan to go back soon better prepared. The property gets sold the end of the month so I will probably just grab what I can and leave the rest. I am not sure I can get my trailer threaded through the trees, fence posts, and thorn bushes anyway.

That is so cool. Sorry about your grandpa.

Thanks.

Might be cool to pull some of the good parts of and decorate the shop w/ them. Maybe put the fender, door and bed side on the wall like the truck is coming out of the wall? Or maybe you could incorporate them into some functional furniture/ storage? I could see building a rack for spray cans on the inside of that driver's door and mounting it on the wall w/ hinges to you swing it out to access the rack. It would be a cool way to keep grandpa's truck and memory around.

Hmmm I like this idea a lot. Lots of cool possibilities . . . I am sure my wife will love the sight of another truck in the yard, especially this one :dunno:
