It feels like mine is stripped out. You have to push it in then turn it, and about every turn it only moves 5 miles back. I like to use it to check mileage but when it takes 10 minutes to turn it back 300 miles and my hand cramps up from doing that it gets aggrevating.

Anyone ever tore one appart to fix it, or is there another speedo, I can swap in so I just have to push a button like every other trip odometer.

Did it just start, or?

You've tried going both ways? IIRC, one way doesn't work very well, the other way works good.

I sure would like a push button one too. The trip might be pretty easy to fix on these, however I'd be more inclined to just get another one from a 'yard or someone on here parting out a truck.

I don't rely on my trip anymore. Most times when the trip reaches 99 miles and goes to turn over to 100 miles it actually goes to 110 miles instead. Adding 10 miles for each 100 traveled can really screw up fuel calculations. I've talked with a friend who is a retired speedo repair guy and he said there is a broken piece in mine that makes that happen. I did buy another cluster from a member on here but still haven't taken the time to pull my speedo out and swap the other in. This post might just get me off my arse and pull the replacement speedo from the cluster and take a look at it and see how difficult it would be to tear it apart and see how easy it would be to repair one.

IIRC the trip portion is somewhat seperate of the mileage portion, which is a bit more of a bear to work with, at least on the cable driven setups. I suspect the electrical is similar to hinder tampering.

At best you'd still need to get the right piece(s), and a speedo shop is probably the only place to go for them. Interested to see how complex it would be to fix. I envision at some point in the future when spares are non-existent repair will be the only option.

Damn, i just realized that any info i can gather may not even pertain to the 91 speedo since it is electric and mine is an 89 cable actuated speedo. I have no idea how the electric speedos work or if they even have the same pieces in them. :doah:

I have the same problem on my '91 Sub. At the end of the knob that you push and turn, there is a small bevel gear. The bevel gear on mine was completely stripped, so I just left it. The miles still tick off just fine, I just can not reset it.
If you can find the replacement gear then it may be easy enough to swap it out.

The '90-91's trip IMO are much better designed than the cable ones. The shaft seems to be better supported. I hated the '89 and earlier trip design.

I'm holding one of the little bastards in my hand right now...pretty simple just hard to get to... I swappd in a different trip assembly with ggod nylon gears the last time I had my dash apart, but the new trip OD does not register miles properly... Next time I'm in there I will swap the good gears onto my old trip O.D... Probably more trouble than it's worth just getting the dash apart. I have to disconnect the speedo cable from my transfrecase and drag a foot of slack to the front of the truck just to be able to pull the gauge cluster out far enough to get the cable off the speedo... And it helps to have an extra speedo ass. or two laying around for spare parts when some of the really tiny pieces break or disappear... Be carefull when popping the needle off the spindle (the actual pointer on the gauge face), the spindle can break, and there is a tiny little coil spring directly behind it that you don't want to damage...

3rd pic shows plastic wafer that keeps the different scrolls aligned properly. It's a lot better if that doesn't break or crack...

X2... F%*$!!

I said screw it...a Pen and pad of paper kept in the center console is just awhole lot easier, until I find another reason to tear the dash appart. Although I do need to install my XM radio at some point so it might be sooner then later.

GPS. Probably more accurate than my POS speedo's anyways.:D

That's what I use, it also gives me highest speed I did on my trip and average speed, stopped time, driving time.
Show me a factory odometer that can get you that.
