We took our annual trip to the dunes for New Years as a family. It's something we always look forward to as things get crazy from Thanksgiving through Christmas it's good to know when you're done it's time to head to the dunes!

Loaded up and headed over with nothing eventful, the ol' dodge just chugged along like normal. I actually calculated my mileage this trip and knocked down 12.5 mpg which I think is spectacular for holding 55-60 mph the whole way and there's some good hills as you get closer to the coast.

Didn't have any damage that stopped me but I do have stuff to fix. I got stuck in a not so great spot up against a fence out in the dunes and it was really steep in every direction so in order to get out I was full on gettin' it with my little old small block. I locked the ARB in for good measure and held it in second and juuuuust as we were getting towards the top I could tell I wasn't going to make it so I slammed it into first and spun it to the moon. Not sure how many rpm we were turning as I wasn't even watching my tach at that point but it was a lot for my tired engine. After that I noticed some oil dripping out of the drain hole in the bellhousing cover. It seems to have stopped but I figured the really steep angle and high rpms caused it to puke out the rear main.
Also I was pretending I was Robby Gordon and went bombing through this really nice smooth but whoopy (I said whoopy) section and the back end pulled off the ground and it landed just as we were hitting another whoop. I ended up bottoming out the front end really hard and it pushed my steering ram up into the exhaust crossover pipe from the driver's side and pinched it between the ram and the engine mounts on both sides so it's all pinched shut. I'll have to run the truck over to the exhaust shop and have them cut it all out and re-do it.

Finally, during the above mentioned whoop section the latch on my toolbox broke and the lid opened. I lost a bunch of good stuff! The stuff I'm aware of is about 6' of that field service "blue line" hydro hose that's crazy expensive, like $15 a foot. Also my cool valve stem puller/deflator, my 50' coil air hose, my nice first aid kit, gloves... the list goes on and on. Crappy but what are you going to do... just have to replace it all.

Saw this really clean SAS Duramax. I like stuff that's slightly different but still functional and this fits the bill. Take a solid, proven engine/tranny in a nice comfy truck and just fix the big weak link in it. I'd like to tackle this someday to have as a nice DD/Tow rig.

Snapped a couple pics with my cell phone as we were driving around.
This monstrosity was an exhaust shop's shop truck. Probably serves their purpose just fine as it had a nasty big block with crazy side dump exhaust on it. I'm sure it sits in front of their shop and just attracts attention.

Thought you guys would like this. Clean Blazer pulling a nice little sand rail...

Now this was cool! I saw it a few times while we were there but couldn't ever get a great picture of it. It's a 3+3 with a chopped down bed but it had a Cummins under the hood. I saw it in their camp and it looked like it was definitely put to use pulling their trailer over.

I took our Christmas tree along for the ride for a nice bon fire finale! We always go out on the beach and make a big fire after a nice dinner in town to ring in the new year. Tossed that sucker on about 11:45 and it sounded like firecrackers! I guess even after 4 days out of water it still had a lot of moisture in it.

Good fun! I swear every team you go out you get a calender shot... And I take it your a still digging the tbi then!

Glad to see there's still some beach open there!

I lived there on the beach in the late 80's when the entire beach was open. Seriously on the beach. I had a travel trailer and rangers would catch me every now and then and remind me of the 21 day limit so I'd move to a trailer park in town for a week.

What a life! My handle on CB was Beach Bum and the name of my towing business was FTW beach Towing... back then I towed for free but took donations and was able to survive! Worked for the ATV rental companies maintaining the equipment a few days a week. What a life! :D

Sounds fantastic to me! There is still plenty of beach and riding area open. As much as the greenies bitch about it the local economy knows everyone's livelyhood depends on all this off-road based traffic/tourism.

Check out the dunes on Google Earth someday and see how big and open it used to be!

Anybody guess what FTW stands for? :eek1:

**** the world?

Avery I think it's time for you to build your go fast machine and not beat on the poor old crawler.

Or you get a set of bypasses that are removable and slap me on just for the dune trips!

I agree. It's really hard on a big truck out there. I want to build a go fast toy but I've also been shopping for a side by side. Easy to transport, cheap to run and maintain and even stock ones walk all over stuff like my truck out there.

good call. a few of my buddies have the can am or polaris sxs's that they use to beat on in pismo. seems to be the way to go cuz if you get stuck its easier to dig out and still float on top of sand.
