i have a 78 silverado with a 1986 6.2 under the hood. my truck hates the winter awfully. it wont start unless it's over 50 degrees or so. does anyone know what i could do to help it start better? i've been told it could be the fuel pump......

Sounds like a glow plug problem to me- check your glow plugs and make sure that they all work. Does your glow plug light come on when you turn the key? If not, your glow plug controller may be shot....................

How long have you had your diesel and how much do you know about them?

I would have to second that . I would go with checking the glow plugs, relay, and the glow plug controler. these parts can get pricey but go with GM.

my glow plugs are all good. i've had the truck for about 11 months, and it started acting up when it got cold, and it hasnt worked well since then. the ignition's all jacked up right now. i know some about diesels, but not enough. i know generally all the components, how they work, and why they work, because i've read a lot, and talked to a lot of people about them. but i havent worked on mine very much, so i dont have very much hands on experience.
 
If there was a sudden onset of trouble at the same time cold weather arrived, it could also be a fuel related problem. Once started how does she run? And have you driven it since it warmed up outside? What does it do(or not do) when it won't start?

I would try running some fuel conditioner through the system and see if that helps first....you may have waxed up your injectors or filters.

When's the last time you changed out both fuel filters? They should be done yearly- I do mine every spring. Anyhow, enough questions. Check out all the little things first before you panic!!!! LOL

i havent checked the fuel filters, but right now the ignition is all messed up, so the engine wont even turn over. i just had my dad's friend fix it 3 days ago, and the ignition got messed up again. i think he made a temporary, cheap fix to it. it makes me mad, because it hasnt run nearly all winter. every great once in a while, i'll try to start it, and it'll start. i know that i need to get it towed somewhere to a diesel mechanic shop and get the ignition fixed, and i'm thinking about getting all the wiring fixed also while it's there. the engine was put in before i bought it, by a guy that did a really sloppy wiring job. anyway, since its been warm, the 2 or 3 times that the ignition has actually worked, it started and ran fine.
 
If it has started and ran well since the weather got warmer, there's a chance that you may have had some condensation in your tanks that froze up a bit when it got cold and first became hard to start. You may have also had some summer fuel left in the tanks. Keep us posted on how she starts and runs once your ignition is fixed................And change out those fuel filters as soon as you get a chance!!!!!!!

I'll take a shot at it. To back up what one of the other guys said, condenstaion in the fuel lines can freeze and cause problems. For 86, you should have the Stanadyne Model 80 filter. It's a silver box and should be mounted on the firewall in front of the passenger side(should be). It has an integrated fuel heater that cycles below 32 degree F to heat enough fuel to get the motor running. Check that heater and make sure it's working. It plugs into the top of the filter base. About what outside temp does the engine begin not wanting to cooperate?
