Hi All,

I went offroading this weekend in my 91 Suburban V1500. My engine temp and trans temp were at normal levels, but I would still smell something running extremely hot or burning the whole time. Power steering fluid was at a normal level. Trans and engine oil are normal. The power steering intermittently goes out, especially when I am turning and there is no load on the engine This happens all the time, not just offroading. As soon as I hit the gas the power steering comes back. What do you guys thing? Need to replace the power steering pump? Thanks!

You can try replacing the pump, is your belt tight though? At least a couple of us have had "bad" luck with parts store remanufactured pumps. When mine is cold it still has no power steering, eventually it frees up (I assume the valve is stuck) and power steering is fine.

As to burning smell with nothing being low, I noticed when mine is running lean (tuning it) I can smell the "heat" off of whatever is getting hot...I suspect it's the headers.

Do you have an oil leak? SBCs like to leak oil, so something from the valve covers or oil pressure sender may be hitting the exhaust.

As for the pump, I went through the same thing this summer. Here is what worked for me: http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299498

Thanks for the info. I will see if I have a leak tomorrow morning. Thanks for the link, I will read through it.
