Ok, I have been reading for that last few days about what I would need to view and record data for OBD1 vehicles. It looks like I need a cable to go between my laptop and the OBD plug in the vehicle and a program. Is any one program better? What would you recommend? Would it also be possible to view OBDII data?

Thanks

You are correct, you need an ALDL cable ( http://www.aldlcable.com ) to go between the Laptop and OBD1 connector. The software you need is determined by make / model / year. Several years of the same make / model could be the same software.

TunerPro RT is a suggested $39 donation, but is fully functional as freeware. http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm You will need the correct data stream based on make / model / year loaded into the TunerPro RT program. http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadBinDefs.htm

Getting the Laptop and vehicle OBD1 to correctly communicate is a challenge. There are settings in the Laptop called COM Ports, which need to be configured. The ALDL cable comes with a disc / USB driver, and written instructions on setting up the Com Ports for the ALDL cable.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply. So not only do I need the numbers for the 88 TBI set I'm using on my 85 but also I would need the number from the computer on my sons TPI powered K5. Correct?

Correct, the computer numbers for the TBI and TPI are different. Typically, the 1227747 TBI computer was used from 1987 ~ 92. Typically, the 1227165 TPI computer was used from 1986 ~ 89 (Mass Air Flow system) and 1227730 computer was used from 1990 ~ 92 (Manifold Absolute Pressure system). There are many details (files) to check and double check to get the data logging to work.

Yup! Your 1988 and all trucks this forum covers will be $42. This is the mask to read the bin. I've done a lot of work to $42 so it's very nice to use. You can get the TunerPro XDF and ADX and probably your bin here:
http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/showthread.php?304-1227747-ECM-Information-42

The 1985 TPI is probably... $6E IIRC.

TunerPro is versatile that it can do just about any vehicle. But definitions are community written. So there are ones for Volvo, Saab and even Harley's Buell motorcycle for racing.

I wrote an excel spreadsheet to organize the information to find which files are for what car which can be found here:
http://www.gearhead-efi.com/Fuel-Injection/showthread.php?499-TunerPro-XDF-and-ADX-lookup-Project

If you've never used TunerPro there is a learning curve but once you get the extensions like .xdf .adx .bin .xdl figured out it's easy to understand so there's a beginning tutorial here:
