Ok so I had a truck avenger 670 0-9670-1 and had the receipt. Got it exchanged for the -2 and it was better. Still had a slight off start hesitation but my truck ran like a raped ape... just power everywhere and it was awesome...

now I sold it due to emissions, for some reason I passed twice with this carb but I forget if that is before or after I did vortec heads and comp cams cam (just a roller rv cam) but couldnt pass. Allowed 200 unburnt fuel (ppm?) and I was spittin out 1150!!!!!

so anyway I sold it here and ended up getting a qjet. I am not happy with the qjet and looking at going back to the TA.

so I have a few questions..
  1. Anyone still running a TA?
  2. Did you get it working great?
  3. Anyone have the -3 model?
  4. I see a new one in Aluminum - would that be a better choice?

Run away from the T/A , @80' 427 has a thread about converting his over to have the proper function like a normal carb. Unless you plan on putting it on a trailer and idling the thing all the time just say no.. a standard holley that has been modified is a much simpler way to accomplish the same thing without the need to drill the body to gain the lost circuits.
The Qjet if tuned properly should work pretty good.. The holley would be easier to dial in..This all depends on how diligent you are and how paitient, and carb savvy.

wow ok.. well a shop has my truck and are going to dial it in. They have a carb guy but I think they all say that.

He called me to ask me if im key on keeping my dizzy. I asked why and he said vac adv isnt working. I told him it is a BRAND NEW MSD dizzy... he thought it was something special that came with the msd 6al and I said no it is just a GM replacement dizzy...
so hopefully he can get it going.

screw it.. bought a 0-93670
aluminum version. I figured it hopefully is an even newer version.

Cant wait to get it in and on the truck. gonna call the shop today to see how they made out yesterday and tell them I want to pick it up....

.... Uh yea they all have the same problems..

we will see.. had no problems... well considering the problems it had and the qjet i have now.. I ll live with the problems. Truck ran like a raped ape. And I also hit up the person I sold it to and he loves it. Says it runs GREAT.. but he did trade it in for a -3 version. he said he would definitely go aluminum if he could...

so we will see...

this is to get me by until hopefully 1 year I can get a crew cab and swap everything. Then looking for a 8.1 conversion... so we will see where this journey goes

truck is being pulled in at the shop and they are going to tear it down and get this puppy running. I have NEVER had a shop work on the truck so im sad... ive had the truck since 1989 and NO one has ever worked on it without my supervision...

but when I stopped in with the carb and other goodies... the owner (also mechanic) said his carb guy has been stoked waiting for the parts as he is wanting to work on the truck. they have lifted pickups and jeeps that are all newer..

so the guy poked his head in and saw the carb and a smile lit up on his face... I am not sure about you but I can tell by facial expressions on passion.. rolled eyes is an inconvenience.. but the smile this guy had... gave a warm heart feeling that he is gonna take care of my baby... and get her running great.

i could of picked the truck up and put the carb on myself but they already discovered my NEW MSD distributor has a bad bac advance module and I figured why not let them find the rest and get me going...

im stoked!!!!!!!!!!
hopefully pick it up tomorrow... im going to be calling them at end of today at his request so he can tell me where we stand on it running...

It puzzles me when I hear that a person says that they are having bad luck with a Quadrajet carbureter , as I have had them on different engines through the years. And all have run very well .

Quads run decent on most anything, it's only when you've had a properly tuned holley that the difference become obvious.

No argument here , everyone knows that holley is the best.............

well the biggie is this... I know a qjet works. I have ALWAYS ran one from 1989 - 2002.... i did dabble with an old holley in that time but it ended up blowing out the power valve? anyway the power difference was tremendous.. and now that i have no emissions testing.. i figured screw it.. you can feel the power difference.. so it sucks more fuel. truck barely gets driven so back to the holley..

but funny thing is in 1 - 2 years.. i would like to put a 8.1L in it.. hah...

I do not like most Holley carbs--had some "Economaster" new ones that were great on gas and ran decent right out of the box, also a spread bore Q-jet replacement one that was good once I found the right spring for the vacumm secondaries..

But some others I tried were a pain, they leaked, one caught fire and burnt the distributor cap,air filter and plug wires off a 454 I had--that one was a factory one off a '69 big block Camaro,I discovered, when I looked up the numbers for a carb kit for it--after rebuilding it and endless fiddling with blown power valves, different accelerator pump cams, etc, and backfires when it was cold,I sold it to a purist who wanted a "matching number carb" for his '69 Z-28 with a 396..

While I agree a well tuned Holley will make more HP and torque than a stock carb,I felt they didn't "stay" tuned for long, seemed like every time the weather changed, the carbs protested...the good old Q-jets and Carter AFB's seemed to run well no matter what the weather was..

Devolving into a Q-jet vs. everything else battle, but all said and done, aren't CFM and fuel flow the two limiting factors? "Power" at WOT should be equivalent no matter who made the carb, as long as air and fuel is delivered in the same quantities by whichever one you are comparing.

Undoubtedly most problems resulting from the Q-jets are due to the complexity. Almost no one runs them wide open, all the time, where you'd have little problem tuning them. It's the transitions that are often the issue. They are much harder to tune, and things are so inter-related that if one piece is off (choke coil tension anyone?) the engine will give you fits. Anyone that has dug into them, or read one of the books like Doug Roe's, has an idea of how much can be wrong for your setup. There is a reason (ok, probably 5-10 reasons!) a Q-jet on a 305 or 350 in a car is different than a Q-jet on a 305 or 350 in a truck.
