Truck info!

My experience with them:

Underpowered, horribly inefficient V8 that has head gasket problems, it's actually a Buick design from the 60's, Land Rover bought the molds and had been producing them. 10-12 mpg with what, 200 hp in an early 2000's truck? Pretty bottom of the barrel.

Big time electrical problems, interiors that fall apart.

You know the rag joints that Chevy's have at the steering box? Yeah, those Rovers use those instead of driveshaft u-joints too.

The good:

They are reasonably roomy for their small size

The aluminum body is cool for weight reduction, lower COG and rust resistance.

If it were me, I'd probably still pass on it at a third of what they're asking. Look at blue book prices, last I checked those have depreciated like crazy.

on discos the lower rockers are steel. Rest of the body is aluminum, I have welded rocker skids onto a couple of em.

Everything else that Chris said but times a billion on the electrical problems. Never even seen one that didn't have some sort of weird electrical thing going on.

Ten years ago I worked inside of a Land Rover/Porche dealership in San Diego, CA. I worked for Enterprise-Rent-A-Car so I wasn't employed by them.

At any given time 90% of the repair spots were taken up by broken down Rovers. The worst part was most were newer and in the two years we were there I think I saw one or two that had actual trail damage and use. Most were just yuppie and soccer mom transports that failed. A lot of the crap they had to fix too...ugh.

BMW and Ford having owned the brand did a lot to improve their product. Prior to that...expensive, underdesigned, under performing, underwhelming junk.

My wife loves these things but all the research I've done points to "a lot of repairs". In particular, she likes the same truck, Disco II.

I will say, for all the years, 2004 was the best of the bunch. Even better than 2003. Comments for 2004....."more reliable". Strange for a vehicle that surrounded by problems. I still toy with the idea because happy wife, happy life. If I were to ever get one, I definitely would want a full, aftermarket warranty. We do have a good Rover dealer and I would expect to hang out there a lot.

They are roomy and airy inside but the power is not very strong. She likes fast cars....loves the Cayenne Turbo! The Disco is definitely lacking and I'm sure that is the main reason why she hasn't pressed on the Disco too much. She still like the look of them though.

Unfortunatey, all my girls DON'T like the looks! Kinda funny really.

Good luck but he does need to be aware of the problems for sure.

They get repowered a lot in Australia. I've seen them with SBC's and turbo'd 6.2's and 6.5's along with Toyota and Nissan engines over there.
