The big one is in the spring on Mother's Day weekend (Mudder's Day Weekend). They also have a fall one usually in October.
The Spring one is fun and over 7000 people are there, BUT, it's a huge pain and hassle having such a crowd. You make one run through the pit and can be waiting in line for up to 2-3 hours to make another run. There's just so many rigs and so many people. Our campsite this year was really packed and crowded, and it was hard to park, turn around, and move around at all.
Here's the rest of the story of the weekend:
It was a fun weekend despite a few setbacks. The "Budget Suburban" went on it's trial run, having no cash invested into it, with a 402 big block out of a motorhome we pulled out of the RV and threw in the Suburban in 2 days, TH400/205, Dana 60 front with 4.88's and 14-bolt rear and 8" lift.
On Friday night 8 of us were ppiled into the Suburban making 2wd runs through the race pits when I full throittled it around the corner to spin around, and when I let off, the throttle linkage stuck wide open as we were aimed for other rigs and people. Unable to simply turn off the ignition because of my "makeshift steering column" I couldn't shut the motor off and the throttle wouldn't unstick so I aimed us for the log pile.
Witnesses from the crowd claim that all 4 tires of the Suburban were in the air... all I know is that the front end came up off the ground and luckily the motor stalled out upon impact, and no one got hurt. And luckily nothing broke either. I was glad that we were stopped as we all got out, myself included with steering wheel in hand. The front driveline yoke and right side header sit about 8" or so in distance apart, but there was a huge impact dent where the front axle yoke hit the header.
I ran my Truck Blazer through the pit later that night and broke off a drivers side front shock mount, and slammed my radiator into my fan blade.
My Stepside had no oil pressure and I ran it anways, then blew my front drivers tire off the bead in the mud pit Saturday.
Sunday I spun the right rear bogger off the bead on the Suburban, and on the way home I blew a tire on my motorhome and lost an alternator belt.
But at least by the end of the weekend everything of mine still started, ran and moved.
Other weekend problems:
Richard and Carly lost a tire on the highway on their Dodge on the way up.
Leon's Blazer ended up with a cracked TH350 tranny and it had to be replaced with another in our camp site.
Wayne's Bronco fried his Pertronix, so he spent the better part of the day tracking down a points distributor that would work, which ended up having to be welded, which worked until it broke the next day (Thanks to the local Flett Family for helping track down parts).
Keith broke his track bar and some other welds on his Ford front end under his '91 Chevy, fixed that then broke a shaft.
I brought a spare motor and a trailer load of spare parts, and ended up needing the few parts that I DIDN'T bring.
