well When I start up my truck it will start up, then it will die, try it agian the same thing and it backfires, then try it agian same thing and it backfires, and then it will usualy start up. Its fine once it gets going.its been doing this for about a week. my grandpa says it sound like i got some bad gasoline, so i got some fuel system cleaner, didnt help.

I have no idea why its doing this, any suggestions?

Could be cloged fuel fillter. Usely when I get bad gas it takes a while to get out of the system.

well i probaly burned 12 gallons today and i only had a half tank
I should probaly refill it

another thing my grandpa said is there could be that the choke is full of stuff. I got some Carb cleaner maybe a shot of that in the carb wouldnt be a bad idea

Yeah you just want to run all the bad gas out of it or drain it. I just run it all out. Uselly takes about 2 fill ups with cleaner in it to get it running right. If your carb is real dirty I would take it off and then spray it with carb cleaner cause that junk in the carb will just run into the engine. Once you think all the bad gas is out I would put in a new fuel fillter and change out the one in the carb. That will help alot to.

You have to disconect it to get the carb off. The linkage shouldnt change unless you mess with it. Just make sure you put it back on just like you took it off.

we are gonna add some more to this.
its a engine with about 3500 miles on it, I heard somewhere that your timing will slightly change when things are new:confused: dont know if its true or not but i heard it somewhere.

And the carb I am running Is a Q-Jet.

Ive been driving it everyday hasnt really got better. Like I said its only on start up after that it runs perfect

I almost gaurantee its the timing, and I bet if you quick tap the accelorator it backfires too. Get a timing gun and just start moving the distributer see if u can get it to run smoother!

What I dont understand it was running PERFECT up until about 2 weeks ago.

A friend of mine has a timing gun I guess i will have to give him a call tommorrow. Ive never done timing before so.

Your grandpa is most likely onto something; fill her up before you adjust the timing. Fuel system cleaner doesn't remove water in fuel. Change the fuel filter(s) then resort to timing adjustments. Also check you plug wires to make sure they aren't burnt etc.

Just my .02

Its pretty easy, and the 9/16th bolt holding the distributer in place probably came loose and it moved or u accidentally turned it pulling on wires. When you use the timing light shine it down inbetween the engine block and the fan there will be a tab with number (degrees) and a line on the vibration damper that u will be able to see with the engine running and the light flashing. I usually take a small paint brush and paint the line white so I can see it better!

Alrite I will check into these thing this weekend. It still starts ok to get me back and forth to school, and if i doesnt I only live about 2 miles from school and there is a big hill that leads to my house:haha:

anyone else have any other ideas

Just make sure you keep oil in that baby! haha dont want to blow her up like I did with my first K5 when i was 16 :P

If the problem is only when the engine is cold, you have to at least look at the choke. When I had a Q-Jet, I had to adjust something with the choke at least once a year to keep the cold starts smooth.

If it truly does run good when the engine is warmed up, the initial timing can't be too far off.

My auto teacher said I should look into the choke. he said he doesnt know how you adjust the q-jets
