i have a quick question regarding factory equipment from 82. When i first got my truck from my uncle, it had these like 4-5in bucket steps, and what i was wondering if this was an option from factory... everything on the truck seemed stock when i got it, and i dont know if he would add these or not. The reason i need to know if this was a factory option back in 82' it could save me a lot of headaches with the law in my state/city, and if not then i have to look into different alternitives to keep me from getting a lot of fix-it tickets. Thanks for the help.

yea its a hieght thing and the law states anything off the body from factory counts as the point of measurement if desired. The ones that were on it, didnt look that beefy, probably 1-1.25 in. dia tubing it that same shape, but like i said it wasnt that big looking.

its kinda complicated, but to cut throu the b.s. body height if you are under 7501 lbs
, is 30 in. i;m a couple over, but by buddy is a local sherrif, and said the hp would get me all day, but the local cops dont hassel too much..

This is Californias law on height. I'm going to see if i can find Nevada's law to see if it is worded alike (think it might by the number you gave). If so then the 30" is FRAME height not body height.

Frame and Floor Height

24008.5. (a) No person shall operate any motor vehicle with a frame height or body floor height greater than specified in subdivisions (b) and (c).

(b) The maximum frame height is as follows:
[This table lists the maximum frame height for various types of vehicles.] *

Vehicle Type Frame Height
(1) Passenger vehicles, except housecars 23 inches
(2) All other motor vehicles, including housecars, as follows:

Up to 4,500 pounds GVWR 27 inches
4,501 to 7,500 pounds GVWR 30 inches
7,501 to 10,000 pounds GVWR 31 inches

(c) The lowest portion of the body floor shall not be more than five inches above the top of the frame.

(d) The following definitions govern the construction of this section:

(1) "Frame" means the main longitudinal structural members of the chassis of the vehicle or, for vehicles with unitized body construction, the lowest main longitudinal structural members of the body of the vehicle.

(2) "Frame height" means the vertical distance between the ground and the lowest point on the frame, measured when the vehicle is unladen on a level surface at the lowest point on the frame midway between the front axle and the second axle on the vehicle.

(3) "GVWR" means the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating, as defined in Section 390, whether or not the vehicle is modified by use of parts not originally installed by the manufacturer.

* The bracketed information has been added editorially to meet accessibility requirements and is not part of statute.

Amended Ch. 718, Stats. 1987. Effective January 1, 1988.

I'm just glad very few cops enforce that. I didn't even realize I was limited to 30" frame height. There are a LOT of trucks around here that are way beyond that.

People who own a blazer or suburban need to count their blessings that the cops don't follow the EXACT letter of the law as those vehicles are registered as a passenger vehicle not a truck, the limit for ALL passenger cars is 23 inches regardless of GVWR.

That'd really bring the suck if they started pushing that.:doah: I'm guessing "housecar" means a motorhome?

Here is the info my buddy sent me on the local boards, i think i'm just cruise it and take my chances and wish for the best, lol

I think my last response didn't get sent but here it is again for you. Its a combo of both headlights and height.

NHP will have a field day with your truck. I'm sure of it. I can bet that a normal city/sheriff won't care but NHP sure will.

It would be a fix it ticket I believe. But what a PITA to have to remove your lift and get it inspected and then put it back on.

Here are the NRS's you need. I'm sure your truck whatever its weight is taller then 32" from the lowest portion of the BODY.

NRS 484.7385 Height of vehicle: Maximum ground clearance; exceptions.

1. A motor vehicle must not be operated on any highway of this State if the lowest portion of its body, as measured from the surface on which the vehicle stands, exceeds, for passenger cars, 24 inches, and for a truck or other motor vehicle having manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating:

(a) Of 4,500 pounds or less, 28 inches.

(b) Of more than 4,500 pounds but less than 7,501 pounds, 30 inches.

(c) Of 7,501 pounds but less than 10,001 pounds, 32 inches.

2. The measurement taken to determine compliance with this section must be taken from level ground to a portion of the body or parts attached to the body which have not been added or altered from the manufacturer’s original body design.

3. This section does not apply to a motor vehicle which:

(a) Was manufactured before 1935; or

(b) Has a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more.

NRS 484.549 Head lamps on motor vehicles and special mobile equipment.

1. Every motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle or moped, shall be equipped with at least two head lamps with at least one on each side of the front of the motor vehicle, which head lamps shall comply with the requirements and limitations set forth in this chapter.

2. Every head lamp upon every motor vehicle shall be located at a height, measured from the center of the head lamp, of not more than 54 inches nor less than 24 inches to be measured in the manner set forth in NRS 484.547.

Yeah i found that earlier today when i was looking at Nevada vehicle laws. I was trying to find out what Nevada defines as "body" when they measure.

Here in Ohio it goes by bumper height (bottom of bumper to the ground) based on GVWR. Like said, fortunately this law is not closely enforced because there are a LOT of trucks over this. Back when my Blazer had a 4" lift and 35's with stock bumpers it was within an inch of the limit and I see a lot of substantially bigger trucks running around on a regular basis including several I usually see several times a week on the freeway.

A couple of years ago I used to see a SFA converted mid-90's Chevy pickup going the other way on the freeway almost everyday on the way to work (presumably leaving the night shift at a local factory), and this went on for probably over a year. I would guess it had 36-37" tires with around 7-8" of lift for awhile, and then one day it grew to 42 or 44's and probably 12" of lift. I continued to see it for a couple of weeks then one day a state trooper had it pulled over and I never saw it again after that.
