What tail gate is used when changeing out the heavy Blazer one. I am going to but a Can-back soft top and thought that since I won't be using the back window any more that I could further save some weight by swaping it out. Anyone know which one and the weight difference?
 
i havent done it but i think that its any 73-91 tailgate 87-91 being crew cabs, you will also need all the hardware from the tailgate and preferably the same color.
 
I've been poking around looking to do this as well. As far as I can see from the LMC catalogue, and the responses here on CK5 the gate is a direct bolt on. The hinge and pivot styles changed at one point so be sure to grab a gate WITH its respective hardware.
 
Cool. I wonder how much lighter it is? I know the Blazer tailgate is really heavy. I think that I could save over 350 lbs. by switching to a softtop/truck gate.
 
I took my trucks tail gate off, it weighed maybe 35-40lbs. I took it off to save some gas. not only in weight, but for the wind resistance factor. it is really easy to remove, like brackets and everything. If you are going to take it of another truck in a junk yard, make sure to bring some penetrating fluid. and also the bottom bolts in my truck almost took some sheet metal with them, so you may need new bolts, or what ever. but yeah very simple removal. ten bolts in all.
 
I replaced both the '73 and '75 ones with pickup tailgates. Just bolts right on!

One tip...............run the correct size tap through the factory holes to remove corrosion and paint. :wink1:

Hey dontoe got any more pics of that sweet ass rear bumper?
Out of all the spare tire carriers I see I like yours the best.
 
I think LMC does sell a windowless blazer version, but for anyone in the Northern areas the Blazer hinge area is probably rotted. The pickup hinges on the side panels which is a great way to skirt the problem.

Heed Dontoe's advice, I didn't and ended breaking the internal welded nut on one of the pivot mounting bolts.

My 73, the hardtop was an option and the part number for the soft top version was the same part number for the pickup tailgate for the same year. So even gm was using pickup tailgates long before us.
 
alright, i have a 90 k5, and tomorrow i`m going to the swap meet and will be on the lookout for a gate, what year should i look for, and what should i make sure it has?
 
'73-'87 P/U tailgate.

But the parts to mount it may not come with it. Junkyard is a good place, since most/all tailgates are bought to replace another tailgate.
Ain't able to photo mine now, maybe someone will post the parts pic!
 
please, i will be going to the meet, and its the last one of the season, so i`m hoping to find one there, what is a reasonable price?
