Truggy build Season 4 (Project Freak)

I like them enough that some day, hopefully in the next year or two, I'll put them on the back. Im sure there are things I could do to the back to improve things, but I believe coilovers will provide the best performance.

Who knows though, I'd like the sell the truck and start over or change hobbies all together.

sometimes, when no one's around, I look at those rc rockcrawlers and monster trucks and go...hmm, this might be the better way to go :D :haha:

Update

The truggy as been working well with the new lower COG, front bumpstops, new suspension geometry, and re-built transmission. I installed an MSD-6AL, new heavy gage wiring, a master disconnect switch, moved the fan relays inside (and added one for the low speed function), deleted the worthless 1 wire alternator, installed a new 94 amp 3 wire 12si Delco, and put some orange back on the rig.

But...

I have had a slight knock for the last year or so, prolly ever since the attached picture when I ran for a few minutes with no oil pressure due to being stuck down hill and off-camber.

Well, after my last trip to the Caribou Hills I decided that I had better park it until I figured out what was going on. (testing the new rev-limiter probably didnt do it any good

)

I cut the filter apart and found very little glitter but one large sliver of babbit. yikes. I have a line on another temporary engine, a 500 this time (last one was a 425), so hopefully I will get that in the yard today. My plan at this point is to swap in the used 500 to finish out the season, then either rebuild the 513 AGAIN, or build another engine alltogether. Here is a thread where I am discussing the rod knock with some SME's at the Cowboyseven.us Cadillac discussion forums.

When I built the 513 the first time I really didnt know what I needed, and what I thought I knew, I really didnt. lol. At that time I wanted more RPM capability and more top end HP for mud. Well, now that I run tractor tires I really dont need HP to get through most mud holes, and my desire to throw mud isnt what it was in Highschool. What I would like to do is increase my low end torque and throttle response. I still want a 500+ inch motor, and low compression (10:1 or less), but have no intention of being able to spin up to 6500 rpm like I can with the current engine. 5000 RPM is plenty for what I do 99% of the time.

1) The new paint
2) The Zero oil pressure stuck

I finally got back around to working on the engine again. Pulled the 5 and 6 caps, all was well. Put new bearings back in 8, 7, 6, and 5, then bolted them all back up so I could rotate the crank and work on 4, 3, 2, and 1. I pulled 4, all good, pulled 3.... Not so good. The crank is .004" out of round, and there was aproximately .010" worn off the cap side of the bearing.

Looks like I'll be pulling the engine afterall lol.

Next step/winter mods? Hmm... maybe a new engine?

Re-cam the 513 or build a quicker reving 472....

572 is as big as I care to go with a cadillac, and even then I think I would have to fill the bottom half of the water jacket. (not something I really want to do on a trail rig)

I preped the engine to pull today, should have it out tomorrow and start on pulling the engine out of the 74 CDV. After that I can start working on new crossmembers and skid plating.

I hesitate to admit it, but I havent touched the buggy in over a month. I bought a Polaris ATV for hunting and as a backup for when the buggy is broken, so I've been out enjoying that for a while. Winters coming fast though, so I'll be working on it again soon. For now the plan is to swap in a running junkyard 472 until I get the 513 fixed up, then leave the truck alone for a while. I might take on some small projects this winter, but nothing major. Probably some skid plating, dual rear shocks, etc.

i just pulled the front clip off my truck and was thinking of ways i can make the it a removable cage for the front. what did u do for ur mounts?? and how long have u been building this project truck?

I haven't heard from Brook in, well, looking at last post, about a year. I have a feeling he's moved on to other things...
