Trying to decide on a rear diff.

I am trying to decide what to buy for a rear diff. My old subruban has been reduced to winter beater and mud racing. The rear is currently an open carrier. I am thinking of either a powertrax or a truetrac. I want something that will be good in mud but is still street and snow/ice drivable.

The powertrax is cheaper and a much easier install. I have changed carriers before and have the tools for diff work.

I am planning to run my old suburban for probably one more winter; the body rot is getting bad.

I am pretty sure my "new" suburban is open carrier front and rear and plan swap parts to the "new" one when I finally put the old one out of it's misery.

Let me know your thoughts. Also let me know if you recommend a different diff altogether.

PowerTrax. NoSlip or LockRight? I had a NoSlip in a Ranger I owned. Installed it myself and loved it. Predicatble, nice manors (one of the selling points of the NoSlip vs the LockRight), decent price, and stronger than the LockRight so in my opinion a better fit for a fullsize, V8 powered truck.

Detroit, i really dont mind its street manors, and even in 2wd in the snow its not bad if youre easy on the skinny pedal. On ice its like anything else.

Well since your mudracing, a detroit, strong simple. It might take a little bit of getting used to in the winter but not much.

I have driven with a rear locker in the winter for going on 14 years now. No problems yet

You think Detroit Locker has road manners similar to Detroit Truetrac?

I have a Truetrac in my Crown Victoria, it feels the same as an open carrier unless it is slipping. I have never driven the Crown Victoria in the winter with the Truetrac.

I am planning on mud racing this summer only, so street driven life in the new suburban is a big factor.

Most of my cucvs driving is on the road. (Just dont get out to wheel alot :( ) But yeah, dont notice it compared to other vehicles, unless you slam on the gas around a corner. I really dont see a reason to not have a detroit.

A Detroit Locker is a true locker. It's manners are worse than a TruTrac which is a gear driven limited slip. That said, it's not horrible. I had a CUCV pickup as well and didn't mind it at all. Drove it part of a Northern Michigan winter and had a good time with it.
