It seems like I heard that Dana 50's use the same knuckles, hubs and inners c's as a D60. I don't care that they're unit bearing hubs. Can anyone confirm this?

I tried searching here, pirate and google but couldn't find anything :dunno:

Yep basically the same but uses 44 guts in a 60 sized housing. Or was that the Dana 61:thinking:.

I think you are right though. I remember ready something in petersons about cheap junkyard builds and using 50s instead of 60s.

Dik

Think the only thing that is interchangable is the wheelhubs, rotors and lockouts from a Ford 60. Course the lockouts are the same as any other 60....

I always thought the common parts between a TTB 50 and a kingpin 60 were the locking hubs and bearing hub/rotor assy's (Ford only).

Seems like the TTB housing is square-ish so I wouldn't think the knuckles would swap.

I used to have a 95' F-250.

The bearing hub and brakes were all D60 stuff. I think the bolt pattern in the spindle was changed from a D60. I never checked to see if the knuckles were the same as a ball joint D60.

They didn't go to unit bearings until the 99' model year when they switched the D50 to a solid axle.

The bearing hubs and brakes on the front of my buggy came from a TTB D50 because they were better than the ones that I took off of the D60 originaly.

What I'm really curious about is if the c's and knuckles can accomodate 1480 (D60) joints and if the inner c's can be transferred to a regular (solid axle) housing.

On the TTB the housing is square. I imagine that you could make it work but with a lot of headaches.

I never broke my axle but do remember that the u joints looked larger than 44 stuff and smaller than D 60 stuff.
I ran 35" and 36" tires and abused it a little and had good luck.

I've got Dana 50 hubs from a junk yard in my 60 front.

At first they didn't work, but after I removed the "FORD" sticker, then suddenly they began working :doah: :D

Hey I hope this isnt too off topic but what does it take to use dana 50 hubs on a dana 44?

I just kinda thought if you have a d44 housing bored to be big enough for a 60 shaft then had the 60 inners recut for the d44 30spline would it work?

Can't be done, the parts a simply too big to fit.

Imo, it's not cost effective or worth it to do that to a D44. You'd need everything from the knuckles out, not to mention convert the carrier to 35 spline.

Yeah thats what I am seeing now. I was just thinking out loud really. My thoughts were to just have custom inners made with 30splines at the carrier.

There are D44 carrier with higher spline counts, even 35 spline IIRC. It may be possible to use a different spindle and D50/D60 hub (the spindle may have to be a one off custom piece).

The real problem is your not changing the inner c's or knuckles and are hence stuck with the 297-x (D44) u-joint.

If you're talking about changing those two you've basically done all the work to make a custom hybrid axle and you've got to ask yourself why you're using the D44 center section and tubes.

yep thats what I figured out after thinking about it.
