I need some help. I found a sweet 90 k5 in a local scrap yard that was doing the cash for clunkers. It just had a lift put on it (all the parts look brand new) and not a spot of rust(from New Mexico). Well they said that i could buy the tub and the lift for $500. But how would i be able to swap it out on my 88 k5 legally? My 88's frame and drive line is great but it is from the north and the rust has got to the body bad, and it would cost more to replace panels and do the body work then just replace it. So how would i go about doing the swap since it was involved in the cash for clunkers.

As far as i know the cash for clunkers allows the junk yard to sell anything but the engine and transmission. Depending on how the laws are in New Mexico will dictate if you can legally swap the tub onto your frame. Here in California if you buy a vehicle from the junk yard and have a receipt then you can do the swap and show the receipt to the DMV and have either the DMV or the local Hiway Patrol verify the VIN and paperwork as long as the VIN has not been tampered with and register the vehicle. In most cases you may end up with a new VIN tag put on by the HP.

So in that case if i can do it in New Mexico with the dmv. How hard is it to remove a tub? Is it mostly the body mounts and engine bay?

On the CFC cars they are not allowed to sell anything with a Vin #, if they do you will not be able to register that number and they probably will get a call from the Feds.

I'm going to the dmv to find out. I was also told that if there is a problem with the vin on the tub that i should cut the fire wall off and repace it with the one out of my 88. They said its like cuting out the panels but keeping the strength.

So i found out at the New Mexico dmv it is legal to change the whole tub as long as i have the title and a receit showing that i purchased it. The thing with the cash for clunkers is we cant purchase the main drive train and you can only do the tub or the frame but not both. When it is sold to a scrap yard they can sell everything off of it but it can never be re-registered under its original vin,and the motor and tranny crushed. So to do the vin you have to take the titles from both have it weighed and inspected with both vins untampered and they will register it under both and issue a new vin.

So i hope this help anyone else thinking of doing it at least in New Mexico.
