ok, my flatbed gig will have a fair amount of 90 notches and I wouldn't mind using a notcher as opposed to the chop or bandsaw for em..

I had a super cheap one that the bushing failed on...

I don't want to spend 250 to 350 for a pro tools, jd2, etc... but I am willing to spend 150 to 175.. is there something exponentially better in that range than the $50 ones? I saw an offering from "affordable bender" for like 175 that looked a bit stouter than the standard cheapies... :dunno:

I also see the "ole joint jigger"s in the $150 range, but honestly, they look the same as the cheapie $50, 60 ones....

anyone have some recent experience?

Hefty fab just bought a boat load of baliegh equip. A notcher being one. It's the larger one, but their equip seems to be Simply amazing!

thanks for the input... I'm really leaning toward that one... I can still sleep at night for $200.... :haha: the $600 one is sick, but WAY beyond what I can afford/need..

didn't know they had one, that's gotta be a serious POS.... :haha:

That one looks identical to the jd2 one Paul, which works well. I just wish we could find some longer hole saws. They can be a pain at certain angles that it wont go in far enough and you gotta get a saw out to finish it.

yeah, I actually just looked at the jd2.. similar pricing too... the pro tools is a bit more, and actually doesn't look as nice as those 2... but the $300 one looks nice... don't wanna spend that tho...

I generally chop notch my crazy angle stuff, or plasma/grind it... but for 90 and 45, I like the notchers...

gotta wait till the first for this purchase tho..

It wont do you any good over 60 or so i think. But inside of that it works well. but like i said, expect the annoying procedure of getting 3/4 through the tube and then having it bottom out in certain situations.

you mean vice versa? they all cut straight 90's, only need a 2" deep holesaw for that...

right... anything crazier than that get's a choppy/plasma...

What im saing is, even a 45 wont make it with a single cut. You get almost all the way through, then need to flip or cut with saw.

Hence why i dont understand why they dont make hole saws that are double length...

I have found them.. But for like $150 a piece :eek1:

can't say I've seen anything other than slight difference between manny's, no deep specifac... and we have TON's of holesaws at work...

it's been so long since I used one.. think I used the cheesy for a 1/2 dozen 90's and it crapped out.. chop after that all the time..

and that's really all I want it for this time too... actually 1/2 the joints probably, will be miter cuts on this... :haha:

Idk if you have seen the any pics on the rig my old boss built, but every joint (alot of joints) was done with a jd notcher and 2 milwaukee hole saws.

yup, neat... I just always felt comfortable chopping close and carbide burring a final good fishmouth when doing odd angles, especially on odd planes...

I prefer the jd 2 notched I like the clamp better. Plus you can get the reach around from swag for the notchmaster.

The baleigh will work awesome too but I have used both and like the notchmaster better

Adam there were companies in the past making deeper hole saws. For cheaper than 150 but they didn't sell many. Just not alot of demand. The really big fab shops and more to the point production shops that do a ton of tube notching use either a sander notcher or a modded end mill
