Kinda long.

Sine when did doing a tune-up take all day. I'vw had heel today doing mine one problem after another.
Well I finally got to givin my truck a tune-up cause the old spark plug wires had some nasty cuts in them. I got all Accel plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and coil. So i pulled the cap and rotor off and left the wires on it. Well the wires were super stock wires so you had to cut them your self. Well that took a while cause had to measure and then feed the freakin wire through the boot(a real pain in the ass). So I pulled a wire off the old cap. Made the new one then stuck it on the new cap in the right place. Ok did all that, then put the coil on and put then new cap and rotor in the truck. Got my haynes book out to match the plug and wires right. Got everything connected and pluged in right. Went to test it and it wouldnt start:mad:.
Well now it wont start just changed out wires, cap, rotor, and coil. So I check and make sure everything is right and it is. Try agian and nothin, just turning over. So I put the old cap, rotor, and coil on and nothin. Well now Im like well I guess I didnt cut and fix the wires right, so I put on the old wires. Still nothin. Now Im cusin and mad cause I didnt change anything and just put it all back like it was. So my dad comes out and we check to see if its getting a spark. Pull the plug out and stick a screw driver in and I see a spark. Well then we get it top dead center to check and see if the rotor is pointing to the #1 cilinder. It aint :doah:. I was one off all the way around. So redid the wires and it fired up.
So now I have to put all the new stuff back on:(. Ok I do that go to start it nothin.(wtf) Start looking and my tac wire aint pulged in. I have an aftermarket TBI and it has to read the tac to send fuel. So plug it in and it cranks up.
Now time to do the spark plugs. Look in the haynes book and it recommends .045. Well hell I remember the guy at Autozone telling me they need to be set at .025-.035 on my old plugs freakin idoit. But these are diffrent plugs they are Accel V groove and they have an up sidedown v in it. So didnt know what to set them at. So I called Orealys and they said to just set them at .040-.045. So I get that done and put them in the truck. I turns over but dont want to really run unless I give it gas. Now what? Well after a minute or two it would hold an idle but be real rough. So now what? Well got to looking around the engine while it was running, and it smelled like it was running lean. Dont know why it would be running lean. So on my TBI system I can adjust the fuel mixture and everything so I crank up the fuel and it runs fine.
Now the questions. Why did it run lean when I put the new plugs in. Was it because the gaps were wrong on the old plugs and so now it can run on a better mixture or what? The old plugs really wernt old maybe 6 mounths. And do you think I set the spark plug gaps to the right setting about(.042-.043).

Should be gapped at .035. Unless you have an aftermarket high voltage coil.
Have you checked/adjusted the timing?

Yeah forgot to mention its a high voltage coil to on a hei cap. I had the timing set a while back at a shop so its right.. It didnt move during the changin of parts today. cause I have a scratch mark on it now to tell me if its lined up.

What about when you turned the dist. cap. Doesn't that change something?
Well on my cap fits snug. It may wiggle just a little bit maybe .010 of an inch but not enough to change the timing. I drove it some today and I noticed a little more power in it. So Im guessing I had the gap on the old spark plugs wrong.
I was just wanting to no why it was running lean at first with the new spark plugs.
Now for about the past 2 weeks it had been running alittle rich(but I didnt adjust anything on the TBI). I guess the old spark plugs with their to small gap finally started to not burn all the gas in the chamber.
Well I think I just answered my question. Since the gap on the new plugs is almost twice that of the old one it has a longer spark. So I guess it would burn more fuel.

So it started running better without any more work? Possibly your "aftermarket TBI" needed to figure out there was a new plug gap. Sometimes disconnecting the battery after a plug change is recommended, but I don't know what you've got

I have the holley 670. Ill take it off the battery and get it to reset and see if anything changes.

suggestion on assembling the wires (for next time): windex. once you have the terminal crimped in place, just squirt some windex into the boot, then insert the wire. the windex lubricates it enough to slide in, then evaporates quickly. the ammonia does not damage the wire or insulation. i've been running mine for over 5 years on my dd after using that method, and about 2 years on my k5.
