Just had a body off resto done on my K5. Tranny had no issues prior to resto and has about 20K miles on rebuild. Tranny Shifts fine through gears unless you stop and turn off ignition (Operating temp). If you restart say within 5 minutes put in drive, the tranny does not want to shift out of first gear. It will but you have to drive it a ways. It does not have this problem unless you turn the iginition off. I can stop and start and it shifts fine. I did notice there was extra fluid in the tranny but I have drained to operating levels.

Well, there is no electrical "shifting" device on a TH350,so I'd say its unrelated to switching the ignition off--but it does use a vacuum modulator, and switching off the engine shuts off the vacuum supply ,and if the hose going to the modulator was split or pinched ,or even hooked up to the wrong port on the intake,it might take a minute to build up enough vacuum to let it upshift properly..but usually even with no vacuum a TH350 will upsift into second gear OK,it will not go into third until its going 50+ moph, and will feel like it goes into neutral when you let off the gas ,if there is insufficent vacuum to the modulator..

A sticking govenor or a stripped govenor gear in the tranny will make it stay in first gear, but it will not upshift to second or third at all,if the gear is stripped badly enough not to spin the govenor weights--it might still grab good enough to make it upshift erratically though....thats easy to check ,and fix though, you can pull off the tin cover over the govenor and slide it out of the tranny case to inspect the plastic gear on it..

Problem was due to a vacuum leak at the modulator. The rubber hose that connects the modulator to the intake hard line was loose. Thanks.
