turbo k5

i know a 383 would do it fine but again i want something different. i just thought i would be cool to have a turbo k5 blazer if it happens i dont know it depends on if a find a good 6.0 engine and trans for cheap.
 
How about a turbo 305?

Might actually get some fuel efficiency out of one if it had the "on-demand" power of a turbo pushing it.

There must be some reason you don't see much in the way of turbo 305's. (short of the fact that very few care about the 305 in the first place lol) Not sure why though, it would seem an interesting project just to do, unless there is some inherent reason why the 305 can't be turbo'd.

A turbo'ed 305...hmmm that would be different.
 
Couple of points

I just talked to my son who works on turbocharged Subarus and Mitsubichis (they just put a turbo on a Yaris). He says the cost to put a turbo on a K5 would be about 2-3k; rebuilding the bottom end is not necessary, but "nice" and you'd need to keep the compression ratio around 9to1. His first comment was "why not put a blower on it?" Good luck.
 
Its strange there dont seem to be a lot of turbod GM 305s
Twin turbod Mustang 5.0s are pretty common,and very fast. Course the 5.0 is a lot stronger engine than a 305. Plus the high compression ratio of the 305 is an issue you have to deal with.
 
Perhaps maybe you'd just be better off turbo'ing the 4.3, which is why GM did just that?

Obviously it would need to be an engine large enough to power these beasts of a vehicle, but the 4.3 NA is/was considered enough, if barely.

Advantage of the 305 is that TPI is a bolt on, while the 4.3 would probably be a bit more difficult.

Just mentioning TPI because GM's early attempts at turbo, with carbs, were mostly dismal failures, especially the early 3.8's and the short lived Pontiac 301. Although someone is now making airtight carb housings for turbo applications, it seems to me EFI is the only way to efficiently run a turbo setup.

I was thinking of turbo for my truck, but I'm sure it would either cost an arm and a leg, or take a LOT of fabrication, because for one, I'd have it intercooled without a doubt.
 
turbos are one thing i know a bit about and for the money you may as well buy a monster big block you are talking alot of time and effort especially considering there really isnt any kits for sbc other than vette systems which maybe you could make work but then you get into the computer issues and the programming of timing, fuel, for the boost probably all kinds of custom parts that need to be fabbed.....


get a blower!
 
I have a 90 K-5 or 1500 whatever, and it has a centrifugal type supercharger from vortech. This is very similar to a single type turbo, the only difference is, it is belt driven. I imagine if you found an exhaust manifold, you could make a very similar setup. I suggest TBI over TPI especially for cusom setups. I dont know if TPI is a blow through system..if it runs before or after the MAP. If you were looking for even more potential, you could run a 454 TBI throttle body on a turboed 350 to get more CFM. From what I have read TBI's only problem is lack of airflow, otherwise they are good motors. Putting the manifold under boost would eliminate that problem. Minor modifications would be need for your chip though, if you were looking 350-400hp.
