Turbo worth getting for a trail rig?

So I have my M1008 that's mainly a trail rig now. It gets towed around for the most part, but once I can get historical plates I want to drive it on the street every now and then. Right now I'm running a 465 trans, 4.56s, and 40"s (probably go to 42's soon). In the rocks, I couldn't be happier, it crawls like a dream. But the little time I go in mud/sand I cant find the right gear, its either reving at redline, or if I shift up its not enough power. I know the gears in the 465 have some big gaps. Think a turbo would help me out? I probably wouldn't even notice it in the rocks, but I think it would help out in mud and sand. I need to redo most of my exhaust, I now have true duals that are getting in the way of my rear 4 link. It would be really nice if I could have a single 3 inch. Anyone have any thoughts?

My turbocharged engine has the same problem -- Goes great crawling around at 1000 rpm all day long, but I can never seem to find a decent gear when I get into some mud and need some wheel speed. I think an automatic would actually be a pretty big help in that case... The NV4500 does not have any better gear spacing than the 465 does, just shifts nicer.

I am not smart enough to tell you for sure, but you should pick up the book MAximum Boost by Corky Bell. That book is incredible and will teach you a ton about turboing your engine. Right off the bat, I can tell you that a single 3" exhaust on a 302-350 will probably be insufficient. You'll want at least a 3.5" or larger. Also, in many cases, you'll find a twin turbo setup to be more efficient (two smaller turbo spool up faster and give more power down low and comes on smoother). But it's all up to you to research what you want.

Anyway, sounds fun, you can always practice on my truck if you want! :D

Jessie: Since it's an M1008 he's got a diesel, and a single 3" on the 6.2L is plenty. I've got 3" straight pipe post-turbo on my truck.

A turbo on a diesel is never a bad thing - I would go for it. You'll get way more power, especially in the higher rev bands (mud & sand).

I was with a friend in Moab (bhays on here) and there were a few obstacles that he had to power-brake and get the turbo spooled a bit before unbraking and bumping over the obstacle (he had some difficulty if he didn't spool first). He's got a 4BT in his Jimmy.

When it's not spooled, a turbo on a diesel is a bad thing, it's a significant restriction in both your exhaust and intake streams. If you're going turbo for a crawling rig only, you'd want a very different turbine than if you're using it for mud.

At low engine speed the restrictions aren't significant. I doubt you would ever notice the difference...

Here ya go (yeah, it's a 6.5 - same diff :wink1:) :

Personally, I don't care for superchargers. They are parasites compared to turbos. With 6.2 liters of displacement (which gives plenty of low end grunt without boost) you don't need boost when rock crawling or putting down the trail. For wheeling in mud and sand you will have no problem getting a turbo spooled, so there is no drawback there.

Thanks for all the info, Im pretty much sold. Time to start piecing a setup together.
