87 Red K5

I've got an 87 K5. I need to replace my cruise control / turn signal lever. The wiper controls broke on it to where it spins completely around, so it's shot. I've ordered a new one from LMC which will be here tomorrow. I decided to go ahead and take the old one out (had nothing to do last night) so I could stick the new one in when it got here. I'm afraid during the "removal" part, I might have torn something up.
Theres the little box part of the column shell that the control lever and the tilt lever go through, I assumed this needed to come off to get the lever off. I figured there must be a set screw or something inside there that I needed to take out and the lever would come right out. I looked in my trusty Hayes Manual before I started this, but found nothing on how to do this. Also, I've had 3 S-10's over the years and this little box just snapped off on all of them. Anyway, I pryed on it some, it finally came out, I cracked it in the process, but it has a plastic piece that slides fowards and backwards that goes in it that pushes the rod that goes to the high / low beam light control at the bottom of the column. I don't know if I can get this all put back together and it work right.
Anyway, my new turn / wiper / cruise lever and a new black cover piece I order to replace the one I cracked are going to be here tomorrow in the mail and I want to put it all back together. Has anyone had any experience with this and can tell me how to get it all back together? Or if theres a diagram of a steering column anywhere I can pull up to look at?And finally, I still haven't gotten the old lever out. I read in another post that "it just pulls out, if you pull straight out on it, it should come right out"? Is this right? I don't want to break anything else trying to get this wrapped up. Thanks.
