I'm at a total loss on this one.
Replaced the signal switch a few months ago to fix no turn signals. Worked ok til last week. Signals working ok til halfway into my drive. Signals acted funny, weird pattern, then nothing.
Took the shaft down to the switch again, all is ok.
Hazards & brake lights work.
Fuse is ok.
Harness is plugged in & snug.
All bulbs are good.

What am I missing?

Tired of running around with no signals feeling like a major a-hole. Driver window motor needs replacing, so no, I can't use hand signals.

This is on the '89 K5.

First, could be the blinker module, the little metal can. There should be two on the fuse panel, one for blinkers and one for hazards. Swap them and see if the problem changes. If so, replace the can, easy peasy.

Is this ALL of the turns, front and back, left and right? If it was just one corner I'd be thinking about a bad ground, but if it's all four, it's more likely something central. I'm thinking the switch lever, the cam inside the column, or as mentioned, the module. I hate the cheapo thermal ones and always replace them with the slightly more spendy solid-state ones. These use an actual relay and a circuit in the little can.

They don't change blink speed when you've got a trailer attached the way the thermal ones do, plus they don't fail so often. They are noisier, but eh, in our trucks, what's another click? :D

Never knew I had two flashers. Signal flasher is on the fuse box. Hazard flasher is on a small box right of the gas pedal. Took a while to find. Swapped them, bingo it worked. Thanks a million man! I owe you a beer.

Now if only I hadn't broken the plastic cam when removing my steering wheel. Bright & early to the parts store tomorrow.

No idea what the thing is right of the gas pedal; I'm so used to my '70's trucks I've forgotten how your new-fangled stuff works :doah:

And those cams break. All the damn time. I crack them when I get into the truck, somehow, done it twice now. At least I'm getting really good at popping the wheel off and swapping them :haha:

Anyway, glad to help, and hey, it's what CK5 is all about.

Those solid state flashers are louder. Plus it "clicks" one time more than the lights flash. Still trying to get used to that, for a sec I think my signal cancel isn't working.

Thanks again! Nice to drive around not feeling like a complete asshole.

Is there a way to bench test the flasher? My 88 has no working turnsignals or hazards. Fuses are OK and all lights work including the wipers, brights, and horn. I cant even get the directional arrows to light solid.

they cost like 3 dollars just go get a couple new ones.

I used to pull them at the wrecking yard. Guy would never charge me for them

I know, just wanted to see if I could bench test it to see if its good or not before making a trip to the parts store specifically for a new one in hopes of fixing it.

I have switched the cans bot times the hazards work, when I test for power in the fuse box with my light it lights up on hazards and nothing on turn signals. What do I do?????

Hi and welcome @Mckaym. The key must be on for the turn signal fuse to have power, not for the hazards. What year is your truck ? we can help you check the wiring to the turn signal switch. What happens when you select left or right turn ? bulbs light and not blink or no bulbs light ?
