The turning signal lever is almost shot. I really have to push it far up to put the turning signal on during a right hand turn. It hardly clicks in place. I know I have to replace a two dollar piece of plastic inside the steering colum, but I don't know how to get to it

I have no idea how to do this and I know labor is $175 because this was done three years ago too.

If you have any idea let me know.

The truck is a 1990 K5.

Thanks in advance!

The steering wheel is easy to remove. Should be self explanatory from that point. If you can't figure out how to get the steering wheel off, $175 is going to be cheap.

steering wheel puller... or unthread the nut to the end, and pull on it while someone hits the nut with a hammer...

then you'll want a lock depression tool to get the snap-ring off the shaft and pull the lock plate...

you can do it without, but it's a big pain in the arse...

the turn signal actuator is right under that, held in by 3 phillips heads..... best to just buy a new actuator.. ac delco, they usually run like $30 or so....

How do I do the swap?

Is it as easy as removing the broken piece and putting in the new one or is there a ton of stuff in the way? Especially with keeping the wheel on.

exactly what i said.. the wheel has to come off, and the lock plate under it, to get to the turn signal...

That's not the whole story...

Lockplate depressor is cheap, 15 bucks, and will no doubt shave an hour or two and alot of cussing and maybe some bleeding fingers. Steering wheel puller itself is about the same cost, sometimes it's the only way too. Beating it off doesn't always work.

THEN

You need to loosen the base of the column so it drops down a bit. Then you can undo the connector for the turn signal switch at the base of the column and snake it up the column jacket. Then snake the new one down and bolt it all back up.
