I'm going to swap out the q jet on my 85 because it's starting to crap out on me. I'm looking at the Holley 600cfm and the edelbrock 600cfm. I know there are 2 different brackets I wound need to get from Holley for there carb to work with my 700r4 TV cable but what about if I went with the edelbrock? Would I need any specific brackets?

If you are talking about the bracket that bolts to the carb linkage to correct the tv geometry of either of these carbs, then yes, you will need that. My question, why don't you have the Q-jet rebuilt or replace with another q-jet?:dunno:

I recommend rebuilding the QJ. They are fantastic carbs. But if you really want to swap, go to Bow Tie Overdrives website and get their TV made EZ bracket for whatever carb you want. Easy easy fix. They know what they are doing when it comes to 700R4's

I 2nd, 3rd this. All you'll hear is keep the QJ, there's a reason for it.

And, definitely go with Bowtie OD's TV made EZ bracket if you do get an ebrock or holley or whatever else.

If you're going to stay carb, stick with the Qjet, particularly if you want to go off road. The Qjet is one of those carbs that a lot of people don't know how to tune properly, so the first impulse is to swap it out, but nothing is gained and there is plenty to lose. I second the recommendation for Bowtie OD if your heart is set on a change. If you don't want to mess with rebuilding the Qjet yourself and want to go with a replacement unit, I was very pleased with mine from Mountain Man Fuel Systems, Jet and SMI have a good rep too.

I am swapping simply because it is cheaper and it can be done in an afternoon, I have experience with tuning Holley carbs. And Holley recommends 2 brackets that's they manufacture to use with the 700r4. Why is the one from bow tie overdrive better than the one made by the company that manufactures the carb?

Because it's the one that actually works. The TV cable requires an absolute, specific geometry to function properly, and not blow up your transmission to death :D (I exaggerate, but really it's not) The stock bracket GM used was designed for GM vehicles, on their engines, on their carbs, with their transmissions.

Holley/edlebrock makes carbs, and say I guess these guys need some type of bracket thingamagic for their weird transmission. hereyago. $$ Others make brackets too, spectre, lokar.

Bowtieoverdrives ALL they do IS the 700r/200r, and related components, like the tv made ez system, cause there was (still is) a need for it, cause no one else provides a quality functioning product. They the best of the best.

:waytogo:

There are several linkage brackets available on the market that will correct the geometry issues that the Holley, Barry Grant, and Edlebrock carbs have. These bolt to the actual throttle arm of the carb and will all provide the correct ratio for tv function as intended, and are very simple to adjust and install. The Bow Tie set up goes a step beyond these brackets and will let you change geometry to adjust pressure advance under different throttle positions, the others are a "set it and forget it" kind of thing. What you need is an inch and an eighth to an inch and a quarter total travel, in a straight line relative to throttle opening, and at wide open throttle the cable should be as tight as it can possibly be without limiting throttle opening or bending the bracket.
