During my rebuild I found that the TV cable was frayed so I went to the auto parts store to replace it. I was told by a reputable transmission shop that any TV cable as long as it was for a carb equipped engine and not a fuel injected engine would work. Well, the first cable I picked up was a inch and a half longer than my cable and wouldn't even come close to working. The second cable from another parts store was shorter by an inch but still wouldn't work. My cable shows the eyelet for the trans "hook" just at the bottom of the the plastic housing when the snap on connector at the other end is pushed back all the way to the back of the cable housing. In other words my original cable is much shorter than all the other cables that the parts stores said would work. I took my Vin # to a GM dealer friend and he ordered a cable for me and guess what? It's the perfect match so I thought I would put the part number here for anyone with 6.2 originally equipped with a 700R. GM part number is 2551-5599. You must have the the original brackets for this cable to work.

I ran into a similiar problem and just bought an adjustable cable.

Managed to get some pictures of it. One picture shows the engine end with the wire and clip all the way in. The next picture shows how the tranny end just sticks out past the plastic housing. The third picture shows the correct cable on the top and the wrong cable on the bottom. The bottom cable is way too long and will not work. Funny thing is GM got a buy out by the Government and us taxpayers are footing the bill yet the cable is made in Mexico!
