No this isn't about adjusting, I've got that figured out over the years but I need to replace the whole cable now.
I snapped one of the plastic ears off the end that goes in the bracket on the engine side and it won't stay in place now.

From what I can tell where it bolts to the transmission it's basically hooked to a wire/plunger inside. So what do I need to know before I go unbolting it to install a new cable? Is anything going to fall/shoot out when I pull the old one out?

Yes, you can replace one without dropping the pan, but if I remember correctly, you're still gonna lose some fluid out of that hole once you remove the cable, not a ton, but still wants to make the typical Chevy-mess.

Ok, I'm not worried about fluid I just wasn't sure if there was some special procedure or if stuff would fall when I unhooked the old cable. I can't find a lot of info on it except the outside cover unbolts and the cable itself has a loop that hooks onto the plunger.

You just need to pull up on the hook. Its easier if no exhaust is in the way, and you use pliers to hold the hook rather than your hands. I bought mine from amazon for like 16 bucks or something.

Any chance you can just clip the cable in place and skip the whole swap? You could cut grooves in the "non-ear" sides and make something similar to an E-clip to hold it on. Maybe it's not worth it if you already have a spare cable.

I think the key is to use the old cable to pull the little rod out of the tranny, grab it with something and hook the new cable before the rod gets lost. I can't remember if dropping it means you'll need to drop the pan.

I let go of mine on accident...didn't go all the way into the tranny but you just gotta get the pliers out and find that little hook, nothing serious at all.

The hook wont fall in. Its connected to a linkage in the valve body. Just take the small single bolt off the top of the housing, shield your eyes from the fluid, pull up on the housing and pull the hook out of the piece.

Pull it all out and go in reverse with the new one.
