ok so I've look at all the treads about adjusting the TV cable on my 700r4, I just picked up a rebuilt Trans and it won't shift out of first, when I installed and adjusted the TV cable it adjusts all the way tight. Am I doing something wrong?

More info on the truck needed. Year, engine, carb or TBI, any intake, carb or TBI mods, custom cables or brackets, etc?

And what method EXACTLY are you using to adjust the TV cable?

85 k5 350 crate motor with a quadrajet carb. Every thing under te good as far as brackets and such is stock.

And as far as the process of adjustment, I hooked it up on the hook in the trans, mount the plastic sleeve over the hook on the trans, on the carb I adjust the place piece with teeth all the way out, hook it on the nipple on the carb, put the linkage to wide open throttle, push the metal button down and adjust the practice piece with teeth, but that piece goes all the way in and the cable is still not at tight as I think it would be.

So, you are pressing the button at the cable base while pulling the cable sheath toward the firewall all the way, then let go of the button so it stays. Then (engine off) opening the throttle all the way by hand, the cable should ratchet in a little bit, and it should be adjusted at that point. No need to press the button again.

Is this the method you are adjusting the cable with?

Yeah, something is not right here. Try the mothed I wrote up.

Once pushed all the way in it does not ratchet back out. Is there a chance that the cable is coming off the hook in the transmission?

To be honest I got one of the tci tv cables that don't have the push button adjustability.

Ive read that form idle to WOT it uses clost to 1" of travel on the cable.

I pulled the slack out of mine, and then pulled it all the way out. Seemed to be damn close to 1" of travel.

I pulled the slack out , and set the setscrew that's on my carb linkage and never looked back. It runs great and ive had zero issues. Ive seen rigs burn up 700's with one trip down the road on a brand new rebuild that didn't set the tv correctly. And mine has been fine for going on two years.

Ok I got the TV cable adjusted properly, apparently you can push it it to far and it won't ratchet back out, it is adjusted now but still won't shift out of first, starting to think its the governor on the side of the trans, guy that rebuilt it said he did not replace it, he is sending me a new one. Are the governors hard to replace?

If your guy didn't remove and rebuild/replace the governor that may be only the start of your worries. That is a fundamental part of this transmission and it function. It is easily removed and inspected by popping off the round baseball sized cover on the drivers side rear of the trans.
