Has any one used one of the universal style cables with success?

My factory cable doesn't want to self adjust. I have manually backed it off as far as it will go and now if I push the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor it gets really firm. As if I I forcing the tv cable to stretch. Went up top and cycled to throttle by hand to observe to TV cable and it definitely looks upset. But it won't ratchet itself through to self adjust either. I do have a universal type cable that requires me to "set it up" but everybody I have talked to says they are junk.

Should I just go grab more factory ones from the yard until I get one that works?

Does any one know where to buy a new factory style TV cable? I have looked and can't find one, and even my transmission guy says he doesn't know of anyone that makes them.
 
Honestly don't know, truck in the photo is obviously not, at least not factory! :) Just the first part number that came up in my search. If it's a carbed 700 app., I assume why potentially a different PN?
 
I have a 1990 with a 350 TBI and 700R4. I went to to local chevy place and they had one on the shelf.
 
Just set the cable so that it is as tight as possible at wide open throttle and lock it down, job done.
Going to try this later. Force wide open throttle and squeeze that adjuster section and let it adjust forward, then back it off until I have no slack in the cable.
 
What Greg means is to have the cable pulled to almost stopped, or as tight as it will go, at full throttle.
That will give the most pressure possible at full throttle.
 
Just in case something weird has happened, make sure that the cable has no slack at idle after you set it. It MUST start to move the instant the throttle moves so it can boost the pressure as soon as the engine starts putting load on the tranny.

Went ahead a tweaked the adjustment position manually last night and set it to no slack at full throttle, but not excessively tight either.

Once I had it set at full throttle, I double checked with closed throttle. Again, no slack, and not excessively tight. I took it for a (short) drive and it seemed to shift just a bit late, but I am also on 38's with 4.10 gears, so it might be just fine and the gearing is the issue. I need to acquire a rear driveshaft before I do too much more driving.
 
I would bet that you are correct that the shift points are off because of the gear and tire combination. The driveshaft isn't getting to speed quickly.
 
You sure you have the right bracket on the manifold?
