I may be picking a 205 up that has your twin stick kit on it. I was reading this on your main page, about being able to use FWD, HI or LO.

Another common misconception is that twin sticking the NP205 will give you front wheel drive only capability, this is also false. To get front wheel drive in the NP205, you also have to modify the shift rails internally, this is a modification that we do here at ORD.
What kind of modifications need to be done exactly?

This is what needs to be done.

You can do it by hand, it's not nearly as durable as what we do with CNC machines because when you start from scratch you can make the profiles of the cuts right instead of making the factory stuff kind of fit.
We have the new rails out now, brand new, built to new process specs, properly heat treated and finish ground, all the features in the right place, etc. They're $125 by themselves or $105 with a shifter.

I have heard the shift rails aren`t necessary, and they just keep you from shifting one shifter into LO, and the other in HI at the same time. Is there any truth to this?

Kind of off topic but still related. Do you know if there is any difference in the shift rail on a 205 t-case that uses a 4WD light versus a case that did not.

Is there any truth to this?

Yes, lots of it. :) Shifting it into that state even by accident would be a pretty expensive mistake. It's easy enough to grind them (I followed Scotts advice and it works fine) or buy the modified rails which I didn't even know existed till now for the peace of mind knowing you won't kill the drivetrain.
