So I've got this twin sticked 205 and I think I have been running in Low. So the question is how fast is too fast for low gear. I was pushing 65 on the freeway last week and on my test runs out in the Dunes a couple weeks ago we pushed it fairly hard as well. The truck ran fine but it seemed to feel like I was wrapped out gear wise real early. I should mention I have 373 gears(I think that the right #).

We don't know the tire size but in low range at 65 mph you'd be pretty close to redline and I imagine you would know if the RPM's were twice as high as you expect them to be.

What shifter setup do you have on it?

Tire size is 33-12.5-15. Shifter setup, do you mean ORD twin stick? Rpm seemed high but The motors peak performace is 2500 to 5000 rpm (Stroked 383 )and the torque converter (2500 stall) kinda set it up for a higher rev to go anyway. I am installing a tac this weekend (just so I know where I am at anyways). I was just concerned how fast one could push it in the low range verses the high on the TC.

33's on 3.73's in low range won't even get close to 65 mph at redline. Trust me, I know. I've tried seeing what low range can do and it won't get anywhere near 65 mph.

I'd say your problem lies in the transmission if its an automatic. Its probably not shifting into gear. The first place I'd check would be the vacuum modulator as its the cheapest.

You give me fond memories of my younger days when I used to drive everything HARD. That means low-range, too. You'd be lucky to see 40 mph with the t-case in low range and the motor screaming for mercy.

I think he was asking haw fast you can go with a twin sticked 205 in just low range in 2wd before it does damage to the transfer case. I myself have a twin sticked 205 in the K5 and have driven with it in 2wd with the transfer case in low range but only to about 30 MPH.

You are right that is exactly what I'm asking but I know it can do at least 60-65 and it still runs. I just realized it was in low gear last night

So now it is confirmed. I was in low gear thru the TC on my rear axle. So this brings me to another question. Would it be bad to continue driving that way. How much extra wear would it cause to be reducing the gearing that way(Thru the TC). I know I need to re-gear but just can't afford that right this moment and this motor seems to love the lower gearing.

Not sure on the actual amount of wear but it's a gear driven case so the wear is probably not that much different than the hi gear driving at low speeds. I'd be more concerned about the extra heat generated by driving it at freeway speeds. Mine gets super hot in hi at freeway speeds and would be even hotter in low gear.

Drive it as fast as you can be safe in low range at the dunes or offroad or whatever. At 5500 RPM you can go over 70 MPH, and if you have a 700R4 you could go over 100 MPH in low range. But why would you want to drive it that way on the freeway? That seems like a waste of gas, wear and tear on the engine, etc.

Thanks for the response. It's not that I want to drive it that way on the freeway(actually I hardly ever drive it on the freeway) just around town. It's just that in HI with the setup I'm running it loads up bad due to the low RPM'S of the motor(kinda like running a 2 stroke not wound up enough). Trans is a TH400 so 70mph sounds fairly right on speed(My speedo bounces all over at those speeds thou). I just did not know if it was ok to use the TC that way

It shouldn't hurt anything, it'll just wear your engine twice as fast. It will be like your engine went twice as many miles as the rest of your vehicle. Your driveshaft speeds are the same, it's just your engine speed and tranny output shaft speeds will always be double, which means your t-case gears are turning double speed too, just make sure you keep your gear oil full in the tcase. You should consider sythetic gear oil in the tcase if you will be doing that in warm weather. Also, it might help if you tune your carb better and get an MSD 6AL box or something, you shouldn't be fouling plugs even idling around. If you have higher compression and/or a bigger cam you will probably benefit from an MSD box.
