If you got something that burns or leaks oil I would use it small doses. Hell I reuse old oil in my DD. Stupid ass car that burns it quicker then I can add. F it. Who cares. I change oil in the other things and dump the old crap in my daily.

If i could hijack a little:

Do most GM cars, not just trucks, say before 1996-ish, have a 3/8" overflow hose going to the overflow tank? Ok, maybe not the 4 cylnders etc.

If not, why not?

Most of mine were 3/8”

I don’t own 4 cylinders, so...

I used whatever oil I had on my old c10 that burned oil. It burned it all... hahahah

I have some Mobil 1, Valvoline and Quaker State that’s at least 35 years old that I’m trying to get rid of too, although I’m using it in my chainsaw as bar oil, still seems fine. Don’t know if I’d be willing to save a few bucks on something that has the potential to do a lot of damage money wise.

Me too......15W-40 is $5 a quart and when your 6.2 leaks a quart out in one short ride,it gets expensive,until I patched up the oil pan and got the leakage down to a slight amount I was using drain oil from cars my friend changed the oil in at his shop,many of them were high end imports that got religious oil changes,(and probably was synthetic too)--the oil still looked new after 3000 miles,he used to catch the oil in an empty jug for me,so it wouldn't get mixed in with other fluids in his oil drain bucket..

The 6.2 didn't seem to care and I'd spin on a new filter every few months and top it off--I cut one filter open that was on it quite some time expecting to find it full of sludge,but to my surprise it was clean as a whistle inside..the engine also cranked much faster and started better in the cold weather with the drain oil compared to 15W-40,probably was thin stuff like 5W-20 or 5W-30..

My theory is any oil is better than letting it run too low and seize up..
Better for the crankcase to be full of any oil than none..

I saw an old metal can of Marvel Mystery Oil at the flea market last week,still full and sealed...I asked the guy how much,and he said "$10"..I said geez,I can buy a quart for $3.99 anywhere"!..

His reply ?--"well go buy it there then-in a nice PLASTIC bottle..the CAN is worth $10 alone,it is a collectors item now"..

He was horrified when I told him I was going to open it and use it,pour it in my diesel's fuel tank!..but I passed on buying it,I still have one empty metal can I saved from years ago,and I'm not a collector..

Question 2: Do you think Mobil 1 oil has a shelf life? The Mobil site says 5 years, but they might just be covering their butt or encouraging us to buy more. I have a quart 10+ years old that I'd kind of like to use right now, but am hesitant.

Couple years back I contacted a couple of companies regarding oil age/usage (one was Mobil, other I cant recall, I think it was one of the bulk manufacturers whose stuff gets relabeled) both said five years. Didnt get an answer as to why, I'm guessing additives and their inability to control how people store the stuff.

I'm running oil from 2013 (marked the containers when I was told the 5 year bit), as I recall that was right around when oil prices went down finally. I bought more than a few cases on sale and with a rebate. I'm just trying to find anything I can to use it in, as quickly as possible. Not easy with 6000 mile oil changes in the car, and 6 months in truck.
