I apologize in advance, I've tried searching through the forums without much luck on this simple question.

I own a 1983 K5 that came with the front driveshaft disconnected. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with driveline assembly, so if I don't ask, I won't know and I'd rather ask here than anywhere else.

With the U-joint properly assembled, how is the front of the driveshaft suppose to connect to the front differential? I see the flange from the diff. but I'm assuming that it's more than likely missing a piece that fits over the U-joint that connects it to the flange on the differential.

A picture of it assembled would be of great appreciation. :D

***EDIT*** Could it be missing a piece call the "driveshaft flange"?

I believe you are talking about the u-joint straps, or u-bolts. I'm trying to find a picture right now. Can you tell if the yoke is threaded so bolts could screw in. Or is it smooth all the way through?

U-joint u-bolts. They go over the joint caps, through the yoke and are held in place by the nuts.

U-joint straps. The straps go over the caps and the bolts thread into the yoke. This is the style that is used on the rear drive shaft.

I can't rember which style is used for the front of an 83...as I think they changed over the years. Either way you should be able to find the parts at a Napa or Autozone/AdvanceAuto. I'd hit a Napa or CarQuest first though.

I was thinking he might be talking about the flat flange that connects the front d-shaft to a NP208 or NP241 trans. I don't have a pic handy, but I'll try to remember to take one when I get up (i.e. when the sun is up).

83 should be straps, at least based on both my 80 and my 86 10b fronts. Both use the straps, and both my 12b from my 80 and the 14bsf from the 86 use straps.

re:

I'm not sure if it's threaded or not, but I found pictures of people using the bolts. It seemed too easy to use either the bolts or straps and when it's easy somethings wrong! (lol) Either way, at least I know what I need now. Thank you guys! :D

you best take pics of your problems and post up before you make a HUGE problem out of a small problem.

but flat flange on tcase end is threaded for bolts on tcase end.

and axle end is open holes for ubolt strap kit like pics posted.

just hate to see you mess it up man.
