Anybody have pictures of the winch hidden in this DIY4x bumper? I'm trying to see how the lever is reached, what protection there is around the winch, how likely it is to get filled with road/trail spray, etc. I assume you have to clock the lever, but I don't even know if you reach in the top or around the bottom for it.

How could anyone have pictures? It's hidden....

 Sorry :D

You reach in between the grill and bumper to get to it or reach around the bottom? Can you see how the cable is spooling in there? Any pictures from the bottom?

This bumper?

Problem is I am using the wrong style winch (won it in a raffle so I modded the truck to make it work). But there is room to work the lever provided I had the correct winch in place. Here are some pics regardless.

I don't have any pics specifically of the winch in the bumper so if you want specific pics let me know.

Did you cut the top of the bumper or does it come that way (i.e. not hidden)? I'm not sure if you modded just the grill or both. What is the winch actually bolted to? Is there a horizontal plate in there? How far does the bumper come out past the end of the frame horns?

I have been planning to build a bumper, but looking at steel prices, the tools I still need and my long list of projects, maybe it's better to let the pros do it. What I think I want is the winch underneath the radiator, between the frame rails, on top of a plate that protects it from below. But I'm not sure that is actually practical to do. It stands to reason that DIY4x has checked all the options and found this to be best (whatever this is).

I'm planning to build a bumper like that as well. The winch can be bolted to the face of the bumper; it doesn't have to be on a horizontal. From what I understand that requires clocking the ends of the winch around to get things lined up properly.

My buddy has a bumper made by Blazin Offroad with the winch mounted like that. The bottom 2 bolts are shared by the winch and the fairlead.

I think that mounting the winch feet forward is a much better design

The winch sits right under the grill area, under the rad is too low below the frame rails so mounting it there would be a real project. This bumper mounted right to the frame rails and has the winch mount plate built right into the bottom. As said, the proper winch would have been a remote solenoid type and I would not have had to cut the lower filler panel for clearance. I can take closer pics of the winch and bumper tonight when I get home for ya. That should answer whatever other questions you may have.

I'm not saying that it has to mount feet down. I just want it protected from the bottom. What I don't want is a winch in front of the grill. I'm hoping it can all be contained within the space used by the stock bumper, spring hangers, etc., similar to the setups done behind a stock bumper. I don't want the bumper sticking forward any more than the stock one does.

The winch I have is just a Tabor 9000. My other idea was to use a Harbor Freight winch cradle (or similar) under the frame - but this might make it impossible to reach the disengage lever

I don't think it seems like it will be too hard to do. I'm going to be doing mine with a Tabor 12K winch. I was wondering about access to the clutch lever, tho. I have come across threads where people made their own modified levers.

you wont find any bumper that mounts the winch down under the rad between the rails, unless you build it yourself, like Mikes winch, mine, etc...

it needs to be a separate mount.... any bumper you buy, has to be designed and sold to accommodate guys who just wanna bolt it up to stock frame horns and go, understandable...

even Kerts A-bomb's don't mount it in as far as the customs do, but that's probably the best "buyable" option... and it also has the bottom skid your looking for too....

I reach in between the grill and bumper. I did trim the bottom of my grill a little to make it easier to reach.

Well the twizted design covers all these bases, so the packaging can be done. It is just missing the rest of the bumper. It just looks hard to tie in outers and make it look like a single thought, instead of a bunch of pieces of steel strung together. And to be a "real bumper" it should come up higher as well, making a bend into a horizontal surface along the top. All of the hard work is already done here:

This winch is hanging below the frame, but it still has the solenoid box on it (why?) AND is clearing oil cooler lines.

Looking at the pictures, the UD1 sticks out 2" further than the stock bumper, sits 2" away from the bottom grill and looks at least 2" in front of the winch. So why not just move it all back 2"? I haven't worked on a design beyond confirming that the winch fits up there - I'm just trying to understand the drivers here.

As long as the winch sits within the frame rails (not in front of) and doesn't hang down much below it, approach angle is optimized. Beyond that, it doesn't matter how far back the winch is.

Thanks for getting the pictures. I appreciate it.

I think the middle one is the UD1 and it doesn't have a notch in the top. Just FYI, I don't want the Gauntlet one because it's just too big.

In that pic from left to right:

Gauntlet with hidden winch
Gauntlet rear
UD1 front without winch mount
Gauntlet front with brush guard (in construction)
Gauntlet rear with receiver tube (in construction)

When a UD1 front is ordered with a hidden winch mount, there will be a notch in the top surface of the bumper to line up with the clutch handle. We can also add a "view portal" to observe cable spooling.

Hope that helps.
