Ugly truckling build

That is better than what I have. Lunatic did a intense right up on how to install windstar fans. :thumb:

Slow going on the truck the last couple weeks, been out of town for work.

I purchased new MOOG balljoints, and while I was installing those, I noticed that the brake hose's looked pretty bad (Dry Rot). I bought and installed all new brake hoses last night. Just finished up the bleed process, and the pedal feel great! I leave tomorrow for a weeks vacation, so it'll be slow going to get it back on the road.

I also noticed that it's leaking several fluids. Looks like Trans Fluid, Transfer Case Fluid, and Rear Diff fluid.

Gotta love projects!

Well, I found the rust... Might have to pull off that full convertible swap I'd love to do. Is this common? I think was caused by the two holes on the roof that appear to have been sealed poorly and were leaking.

If I'm going through the trouble of chopping the roof off, I'm going full vert as well.

Are you planning on doing the swap yourself, or have a shop handle it? I'm not afraid to chop up my truck, but I'm not a welder, so I'd need some assistance putting it back together. I located some parts (Windshield frame and top), so this may happen sooner then later.

My vote is to ignore it for now. Save your money and headaches for the next problem, like those leaks. Maybe buy the windshield and top but set them aside.

Also, I think Mar-K has weather stripping. Dammit, trying to remember who I contacted about rubber and they told me it's made here in the USA.

I'll be doing it myself. Going to take my time and cap the a pillar, unless I can find the full vert stuff cheap. I have no issues welding sheet metal.

I decided to hold off on the roof issues, gonna put that on the backburner for now while I sort the drivetrain.

I have brake caliper dragging on the drivers side, gonna swap that out and see if it solves the issue.

I also just ordered a BDS 2.5" Lift kit! Should be here on Wednesday, possibly installed over the weekend.

One of the motivating factors to get this thing put together! The wife is looking forward to some camping (and drinking, and dunes, ect...)

Awesome See yah there!!! Hopefully. Picking up my old mans k5 for some maintenance this weekend :)

Looking forward to it!

Do I need to do anything to throw a dune flag on this thing? Never been out there, but I see that it's a requirement.

Thanks

Do you have tow hooks? If so I have an extra bracket you can have.

The front bumpers have holes in the bottom, at least mine does, and they appear factory. I just bolted a piece of 1/4" flat stock to it and have been fine.

I started installing my 2.5" BDS lift tonight. Left front came apart great, no issues or stuck bolts! Right front on the other hand is killing me. The front eye bolt for the spring is rusted into the sleeve, and I can't get it to slide out. I got the nut off, and the bolt / sleeve will spin in the bushing, but I can't get it to break free of the sleeve. Any tricks I should try?

I've used this trick a few times and it worked..

I had a spring bolt seized tight into the sleeve in the bushing..couldn't hammer on it hard enough to bust it loose, the lack of room to swing, and the rubber in the bushing absorbed all the shock..

A friend showed me how he got one out ,by cutting the head off the bolt, grinding it smooth and flush with the bracket, then he added some washers to the side of the bolt that the nut was on,put the nut back on,and tightened it with an air gun...this made the threads "pull" the headless bolt thru the bushing and it spun free almost instantly..a few whacks with a punch and hammer and it was out...(after I beat myself up a good hour getting nowhere!)..

Sometimes the nut is facing the frame though,so you have to use box wrenches, and they aren't always as effective as an air impact is...I've had limited success using an air chisel on the bolt ,usually the rubber bushing absorbs the shock and it doesn't work..
I've used a torch to burn the bushing out and then melt the sleeve off the bolt before--also used a sawsall to slice the bolt off at each side behind the bracket and dealt with getting the remains out of the bushing after the spring was off..

^^^sounds like a neat trick^^^ Only works if the sleeve is still bonded to the bushing though.

Sawzall blade between the spring hanger and spring. Cut the protruding ends off the bolt. Spring comes out with what's left of the bolt still in the bushing.
