I am building an 86 chevy crew cab, 12 valve cummins/4l80e/241 with dana 60's running 3.54 gears. I want it to be as quiet and cool as possible inside. Whats the best stuff to put on the outside as well as the inside?

TIA,
Mike

I planned to use the Lizard Skin spray on sound insulation on Krusty when I get to that point. There are asphault type solutions that will work, but they are very spendy and require a bit of work to get them to adhere.

Heat shouldn't be a major concern, depending on the turbo location. I would design a heat shield around the turbo, or get a turbo heat shield like what DEI offers. They aren't cheap, but they are supposed to provide a lot of heat shielding to the outside and a bit cooler air going to the engine. It does help with underhood temps, which of course will help with cabin temperature.

I dont think heat is as big of issue as noise in this situation. Its funny how your tastes change as you get older, 20 years ago the more noise the better, now its nice to have a quiet motor and a great stereo. This truck was a diesel so it has the rubber covering over the firewall/heat/ac already. Other than being a pain in the butt when you do a heater motor or something, it might be nice to reinstall it on the finished product. I think covering all the nooks and crannies helps too. No reason you cant have an old truck be as nice as a new truck. The whole reason for me building it is to have a nice truck that is cheap and simple to work on. Thanks for the input everybody!

So far I've double layered the front floor in my Cummins crew cab with FatMat and it made a HUGE difference. I can't wait to do the firewall and rear floor. I got their 100sq/ft kit and used half of it so far. I'll probably order another 50 for the doors/roof and rear wall.

I did the whole floor and doors in my K5 with a home-made mixture of latex paint and ceramic micro-spheres which you can get from any remote control plane shop. Then I put a layer of fatmat on top of that. It did great for controlling heat and it somewhat helped control noise but when you have a softtop and true duals you can only cut the noise so much. There is definitely less metal panel resonance sound though.
