Undercoat

I used U-pol Raptor liner and tinted it same color as the truck. Turned out great and was easy to spray. I also sprayed inside of tub, one of the best things i did.

Yeah it seems like a chancy project. Once I get the K5 back and strip out the interior, I will see just how much rot/rust there is. I will patch and replace all the rot and then shift to work on the underbody. I thought a rubberized undercoat would seal and protect the Zero rust I plan on painting the underneath. But now I am not sure. I might instead paint several layers of Zero Rust and another top coat of something else.

I'm at the same place in my build..wether or not to undercoat. After doing some research and pestering Ryoken a bunch, I have to second Chevy305's recommendation to put down a complete paint system. I'm in the process now of sandblasting the bottom of my truck/frame as best I can. Where there is clean steel I plan on spraying zinc, primer, and then a top coat. (Chief's rust thread is a great read on this). Where I have rust that I can't cut out I'm sandblasting it, applying Eastwood's rust converter, and then painting over it.

As I understand undercoating (especially in the snow/salt states), once the undercoating is chipped or damaged and water/salt is able to penetrate behind it, the whole rust process starts over with a vengance.

For the interior where the elements aren't such an issue, I plan on painting, possibly bedlining for the soundproofing, add some dynomat, and then carpet.

What he said ^^^^ we've been reading the same stuff.

Although after you blast there shouldn't be a need for rust converter since blasting removes all rust. You can go straight to zinc.

Info

Thanks guys for the info. A lot of choices and opinions. I would love to sandblast the underside of my K5, but can't. I will be doing the work in the only space available to me, my sister's driveway. She and her neighbors will not like me sandblasting my truck there. I know there are less harmful blast media but that's a no go.

Once I patch the old girl up, I will use some type of rust converter on the brown stuff. I will then coat her with some kind of primer and then a layer or two of top coat. With all the negative feedback about rubber coating, I will only use it inside the body.
