Anyone able to identify what these two pipes are supposed to connect to? They connect to a plate on the passenger side of the intake just under the carb. I'm assuming emissions of some sort?20191107_141605.jpg 20191107_141558.jpg 20191107_141601.jpg

OLD SCHOOL hot air choke . . . .

you have electric now via the pics posted .

check to make sure no vac leaks and ignore them if no leaks .

p.sssss.t - bigger problem is the holley product .

Thanks! The thought crossed my mind with the direction the upper hose was pointed. Someone along the way tossed an aftermarket carb on. I'm surprised Chevy was still selling hot air chokes in 79, I thought those went away a lot earlier. Easy enough to just make a block off plate for it and ditch the extra piping.

So educate the young guy here (my blazer is a year older than I am), what is a hot air choke?

The plate just covered a blank hollow cast in the intake. The black circular piece on the side of the carb with the two wires going to it had a bimetallic spring inside, just like is in there now.
But, the original piece had two fittings on it. One hooked to the pipe facing the carb, and the other hooked to a vacuum source.
The other pipe hooked to a filter.
The vacuum would draw air through the filter down into the blank space under the plate where it would be heated to about the temp of the intake.
Then it would continue on up to the piece of the side of the carb. As the intake heated up, the air going into the system got hotter and the heat caused the spring to twist, opening the choke.
The system on there now, uses electricity to heat the same kind of spring, and open the choke.

They made a kit to replace the heated system and spring with a lever and rod that stuck out the side.
You hooked a cable on to another lever on the shaft, and that gave you a mechanical choke.

I did that to all my vehicles that used that system. Not only did it give me full control of the choke, but I could put the carb on fast idle without the choke being closed.
Nice for using a PTO winch.
