I heard on the news this morning that Frieghtliner is going to start producing the Unimog in Germany again and targeted sales will be Suburban Americans.

They people on the radio said it will be 9ft. high, roughly 3ft ot 3 in.(not sure if I heard it right) longer than a Chevy Suburban, and 3 in's wider than the Hummer!!! It iwll be diesel powered and have a 52 gal. fuel tank...

Sounds pretty similar to the old Unimogs.... Except for the price tag which will be around $84,000!

Here is a link to a small story about it at MSNBC:

It also weighs in at 11,000 lbs! And gets only 10 MPG, even with a diesel engine! Yikes! Here's a link to a story that a friend sent to me this morning: http://www.rockymountainmoggers.com if you want to know more about them.

Sparky, turns out that Freightliner is owned by DaimlerChrysler, who also owns Mercedes.... A friend told me that Freightliner shops have been selling Mercedes trucks for many years, just not the Unimog.

Yes Mercedes used to make them and Freightliner is making them now.

Mike, it doesn't apprear that Freightliner is making them, they're just "badge engineering" them.

Mercedes will build 'em, but there will be a Freightliner logo on the outside.

"This rugged, multi-purpose vehicle built by Mercedes-Benz for 50 years will be available under the Freightliner badge to North American customers as early as 2001."

I'd still love to be able to afford one!

Here's another cool feature that I've never heard of before!

"The VarioPilot® optional feature allows the driver to move the steering wheel, the pedals, and the necessary switch controls from one side completely to the other side in under one minute. In severe off-road locations, the driver can always be on the side of the ridge where he or she has the best visibility."

How cool is that?

Okay...had to get into this one...lol. I work for Freightliner Arizona LTD....Daimler/Chrysler is our parent company...which includes: Dodge-Chrysler-Freightliner-Sterling (FORD Big trucks) - Western Star - American LaFrance (fire Trucks) - FCC (Freightliner Custom Coach- Motor Homes) - Detroit Diesel - Freightliner Sport Chassis ( High End version of our Buisness Class for haulin 5th wheel trailers) - Alliance (parts)- and i'm sure i've missed a couple but you get the big picture...same Company...different name. I work on them all every day...really have learned to hate the FCC's...motorhomes suck...lol. I have seen a company newsletter last month that had a picture of the new MOG to hit the US market...i'll see if i can find it in my toolbox and scan it. The cool thing is with the Freightliner badge...i will get to work on them....hehehe....and gotta test drive it to verify the complaints...hehehe.

Also, they never quit making Unimogs. They have been making them all along. There are a ton of different versions of this truck out there.

How beefy are the unimogs axles? I have allways wanted to swap a set under my blazer. I dig the high clearance.

Just an FYI curiosity: Back in the mid '70's my dad worked for JI Case. There were several years where MB made the 'Mog and painted them Case (construction eqpt) colors & decals, etc. I have lot's of cool slides my dad took at the proving grounds showing ground clearance, ramping, (what's the term to see how far up a ramp you can get one wheel?), etc. If you'd like to see them I could try to get my hands on them and scan them on.

You can't beat going Topless!

I know where there is one of those Case Unimogs sitting. My brother has tried to buy it numerous times, but the guy wont sell.
