UniMog's on Ebay

they are nice.. but people say... you need 44"+ tires.... also alot of $$$ to convert to disc.... wont take standard dshafts.....have to be linked due to axle wrap and last but not least... the 406's are the more popular as supposedly the 404's can handle 55+mph barely... bearings dont get oiled correctly...

now I am only stating what I remember... reading...
and have no personal experience.. I want mog axles...

was on njfourwheelers.com but seems their site is down... :doah:

knew i would find it...

we have a mog out behind the shop with those axles in it. I didn't know they were thinking of selling it but they sold it to one of the ranch managers, the whole mog for $600.

Wait, so a mog is a car? never heard of it, which is odd cause I thought I knew my different car makes/models pretty well.

Mercedes-Benz UniMog 404

That should allow you to Google everything you ever wanted to know....

....and yes, these axles are RAD. It's not hard to find a pair for around $1500.

You get 7.56 gears and mechanically actuated lockers (standard) in both axles. The downsides are that the wheels are 6-lug and brakes are designed for a 20" wheel. Link suspension is pretty much mandatory due to the axlewrap issue.

All that being said, I've got a set just like this waiting patiently in my garage for the next K5 buildup. :usaflag:

an unimog is made by mercedes. its one of the most rugged offroad utilitarian vehicles ever. has a ton of pto tools that can be used on it. its pretty cool. i never saw one until i saw modern marvels on the history channel. then i noticed one or two aroun the area. their rare in the us. they are a european vehicle

Oh, interesting. Why is axle wrap worse on these axles? From what I recalled being told axle wrap is when to much power goes to axel, now where to go, so it flexes and warps out of shape? What kind of suspension is this that you mention? Sorry for asing, but if I ask once and understand it makes everything else so much more clear.

due to the portals.... they drop down... so the leafs sit on the axle... and you tighten up.... but the tires are mounted lower.. thus creating a ---Lo thus the tire turns and applies power to the bottom of say an L thus rotating...

so what you have to do is link the suspension... like in a coil setup... you can have 2 bars on each side that connect the axle to the frame but allow up and down motion... but not forward backwards motion... hard to explain.. well at least for me

I know where a 406 front is. It's complete, but supposedly has a bad bearing in the pinion housing. He only wants $350 for it. I thought about picking it up just to have for a rainy day.

mogs weren't meant for suspension flex. We have 416 that's been converted to a crop sprayer. From an empty tank to full (650 Gallons) the back suspension comes down an inch. But I would just use the whole 'mog for a trail rig, with 24 forward gears and 6 reverse no obsticale would be impossible!!!
