Let's just say a "friend" :wink1: put 2 gallons of gas in a duramax's tank on accident. Is that enough to do any damage? Filled the rest of the way up with diesel to try and dilute it. Any advice I will greatly appreciate:bow:

Only two gallons? It may be a hard start. It may have a little extra noise. He could add a quart of trans fluid.

Or he could drain the tank and lines. This would be my method. Yes the fuel is expensive but a pump or injectors is REALLY expensive.

Tell me what year and I can give you hints.

it's got like 36 gal tank. Something really big so we figured it probably wouldn't be enough to do anything. Also heard that the new diesels are far more tolerant of gas than the older ones and can adjust for it. This true?

Far more tolerant until the particulate filter. Gas can and will kill the filter. Is it a new body 07 or classic 07?

New LMM diesel with all the new diesel emmisions. If it was my 6.2 burb I would run it if it was my D-max I would drain it and flush it.

Just my opinion though.

I am also a GM diesel mechanic.

well, put bout half quart of tranny fluid in it. Drove it 100 miles. Filled it back up with diesel. Drove it another 100 miles. Filled it back up with diesel and put a little more of the tranny fluid in it. Hasn't had a problem yet. I guess we'll see how it does in the long run. I'll keep you informed if it fails.

In the VW tdi world we have people ask this all the time. We only have 14 gallon tanks on those and people put some gasoline in them by mistake. Usually for those its suggested that you add an entire bottle of Power Service additive and then fill the rest of the tank with diesel. Seems to work well for those diesel motors but then again they dont have the particulate filter, well at least not on the ALH style motors. No damage to the injectors has been reported either.

well, I guess we'll see what happens. I think it's been diluted down pretty good. I said if not gonna drain the tank to just keep driving it and refilling at like 3/4 tank just to try to keep diluting it. Don't know the long term damage but I guess we'll see

a friend will pout 5-10 gal of gas in his powerstroke from time to time.... but then again he runs it on straight ATF and sometime needs to dilute it for heavier pulls.

In my experience, that little(2 gal) shouldn't matter anyway. Gas creates less particulate matter than diesel, so it shouldn't do any harm to the trap, even though I'm sure GM teaches that any deviation from ULSD would destroy it. With what you guys have done already, it should be more than enough to return to normal drive and fill routine.

Alright so i got a stupid question. why exactly would one put ATF into their diesel??

just curious

Truthfully I can't exactly tell you. But it's what I've always heard to do as the remedy. I'm sure some of the more knowledge members here can detail it for you

Some mix some in because of its detergant properties to clean out internals. My friend runs it straight because, well, its free.

Some also mix it in to add lubricity to the fuel, since the sulfur content has been drastically reduced.

My buddy got "some" from a neighbor lady who came put to yell at us about the large cloud of smoke coming from the Laguna , with my stepfather dumping ATF down the airhorn while I rev the piss out of it .

I think we should try all the old wives tails :D

ATS (a big diesel performance company located very near me) told me that its better for performance than regular diesel fuel.

They don't call them oil-burners for nothing ;)
