I lost a pinon bearing last week in my blazer so I went and pulled it apart and found that There was no pre load on the bearings at all.The nut came off with a 1/2 drive ratchet.

I replaced the carrier bearings and the pinion bearings and used the old gears they look good.so I need some input on the pattern.

That's REALLY tough to read. Are you putting pressure on the ring gear as you turn the pinion? Did you thin the paint with some gear oil?

There really isn't a pattern to read there, either one of the above needs to be fixed or the pinion is way too shallow.

I put pressure on the ring gear and turned it one full turn both ways.l did thin the compound some may be not enough??

I have to give it up for the night when I get home ill clean it up and try it again.

Thanks
Mike

questions

I do have a few questions on this.... Its been a long time that I have done this! So I remember using some dummy bearings to do the setup,Is this OK to do?

Do I need the crush sleeve in when doing it?? This part I don't remember.Or do I use the old crush sleeve while setting it up?

Then, what is the best way to put the resistance on the carrier,I just used my hand.I read in the Chiltons to put the axels and drums on and set the parking break to 20 to 25 lbs??(How can you tell) and turn the yoak one full turn in both directions.

Seems to be a lot to check the pattern by the book.ie axels and drums.

Thanks
Mike

You can NOT use the old crush sleeve and if you over crush it, to much preload, you must get a new one. You can not back off the nut on an over crushed sleeve.

I did ads 2 thousands to the shim pack and added more resistance to the carrier and came up with this.

They are the original gears it came with ,changed pinion bearings and carrier bearings.Ill check your post out.

Thanks
Mike
If those are used gears then I say you are good.

Here is a link to my used gear setup and I've been running them for almost a year now without issue. As you can see in the last post I had some vibration aroung 70 mph that turned out to be an angle issue that I fix.

up date rear end is done!!!

The rear end project is done but ill tell you the things you don't want to do is work when your head is expanding with snot and your head is throbbing from the over load,Every time you bend down it feels like its gong to explode.

when your sick it seems things don't go right, just stupid stuff like one rear wheel bearing not wanting to come out with a 5 pound bearing puller slider type the (1st one came out fast) bearing shattered the cage and rollers out of it 1st then I pound (My head to) and pound no results so I cut the hardened case with a dremmel then it popped out.

oh!! the crush sleeve what a gem!!! lets say next time Ill will be using a crush sleeve eliminator and then putting in the gear oil in sounds simple? well it is if the used only once oil syringe would work.It worked great the 1st time, Stored it for awhile and would not draw up the fluid  rigged up a hose and a funnel and had my wife pour in the gear oil. Lets say it worked but I think my left arm wont be dry for awhile so I wont be needing any lotion for dry skin:o

I guess I am lucky to have a wife that will help and to say the lest Its done and works fine no more noise!!
AND TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED HERE ON CK5 YOU ROCK!!!! Thanks for all your input!!:waytogo::waytogo::waytogo: Best 25 bucks I have spent so those of you that don't have a membership YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR MISSING!!!

Thanks
