UPDATE: It\'s time for a radical change!!!! Pics needed!

update:
I'm in Korea. Hundreds of used K5's here! 82's-90. Diesel's and gasoline. Auto, 1 tons and manual tranmissions. It's a buyers market. Gasoline costs ($1.20 a quart/liter) are bringing down the prices of the big engine rigs. Bone yards are selling complete used K5's for around $1000.00. So...doing a radical change is not a problem...I can always get another.
I am looking for some designs/ideas on what to do? I want something that is not in Korea!
And I mean radical! Suggestions?
Yeah, I know...why cut up a perfectly good K5!
I want something different.
84 K5. I want to turn it into a ?????. Lose the fenders, doors, etc... Keep the hood. Install a roll cage all around and use the bed for hauling SCUBA gear.
Looking for pics! Suggestions?
I want to drop as much weight as possible off the K5.
Thanks!

[/ QUOTE ]In all honesty, why chop up a perfectly good K5 ??? As far as a truggy go's, I've thought of building a megga off roader if I ever come into some money. I'd build a complete tube frame/cage buggy. You could build it so the T-case is tucked in up high. Coil spring suspension for pleanty of travel. Hydro steer front and rear. Oh yeah, I'm getting excited just thinking about it. And that nice K5 would make a great tow rig. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Anyway I must agree don't touch the K5. I had an 84 K5, I cut it up to make a buggy, I totally regret it. K5s don't make great buggy platforms in my opinion. I'd start with an S10 or an S10 Blazer. Thats what I plan to start with. I miss my old K5 plain and simple, I wish I still had it just to drive around.

I think you meant Isuzu.

Back to the thread, I agree with the others. I wouldn't cut up a good truck when there are other options. Depending on your fabrication skills, I would start with a box tubing frame and work from there. Next option would be to use a 70's K5 frame (it is straight and parellel and easy to work with) or a Suburban frame (same features, but longer for more wheelbase options). Take the sub frame and move the rear axle forward about 12" (117" wheelbase or so), cut off the rest behind the rear axle, and start from there. Build a tube cage and bolt on some sheetmetal around it. You could also easily start with a firewall and windsheild from a truck or K5 and build from that also.

Re: It\'s time for a radical change!!!! Pics needed!

I think if you were to tube out a K5, you would be better off buying used sheetmetal and installing it on your tube frame. Skin it out to 1 ply. Why use the K5 at all if you are building a buggy? Meaning, why hack up a truck just to get skins. Sell the truck and buy the skins somewhere. I have most everything left of my old K5 that could make a skinned out tube buggy if interested.

Re: It\'s time for a radical change!!!! Pics needed!

I've considered building a K5 buggy, but if I did it would just be a complete one off tube buggy with K5 skins on it, wouldn't start with a K5.

Re: It\'s time for a radical change!!!! Pics needed!

it'd be easier to remove the entire body, sell it, and just get a old chevy truck hood/grille to put on a all-tube rig if thats the only parts you really care about keeping.

I like what Bob Williams did with his K30. Especially the way the rear end is setup. All tubed out and the rear 1/4 panels trimmed to a stylish fit. Don't know how it would look on a K5 but it might look sweet.....If you have the mag there are better pic's of his rig. It's sweet /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

[/ QUOTE ] ok i like my old GM trucks but no one builds a better truck that FORD nowadays. GM's new trucks and their ISUZU engine cant compare to the FORD superduty and their international engine. and yes ive driven both of them. call me a traider or whatever but ill never buy a GM truck newer than 1987 or SUV newer than 1991.
