So i want to redo the whole thing. Seats, floors, doors, plastics, dash, etc.

My wife is actually pushing me to do this because she hates the 24 year old nasties (as she calls them).

So where do i start? it seems like i have to do it all at one time.

When i do carpets, i need to do sound deadening. If i am doing floors i have to do seats. (and seat belts). New seats mean new console.)

if i do the dash, i should do all the plastics to match.

If i change the seats and carpet i need to do the panels and doors.

arrggg.

so where do i start? I am strapped on cash and want to do this a little at a time.

I dont have new seats yet, and cant afford the sound dampening i want wither. I need to replace the carpet, but dont want to buy a molded one. is there a way to use the "outdoor carpet" from home depot and make it work well?

have you guys used vinyl dye on the plastic pieces? how did it go? I cant decide between Krylon Fusion and vinyl dye.

help?

How bad are the "nasties"? You would be surprised what carpet/upholstery cleaner and a good scrubbing can do. Do you want to change the color too?
I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I would like to change the interior of my burb to red, but like you said, there's no real good way of just doing a little at a time. Also, there is a lot of panels in a burb to replace. I also can't see spending the money to do mine, when the current blue interior is in pretty good shape. It really just needs front seat covers and a dash pad.
 
well in a couple places it is ripped or worn pretty badly.

Also I am doing a color change from red to black. This vehicle is going to do everything from family road trips, to take me cross country on TDY's. Boy scout camping to going out with friends..

either way i would like a new(ish) black interior. I'm not talking mercedes or lexus type. Just nice and clean and decent looking.

So maybe a used carpet? okay. if i can find a decent black one that is not faded (unlikely).

I still cant find anyone to do the seats for cheap. everyone wants something like $400-600 PER bench. thats EACH.

so i think i will get some buckets or a bench with headrests for the front, recover the middle and get a newer third row and cover it to match.


I may have to break out the sewing machine and give it a shot myself. I think i will hang out by the sewing section at JoAnn fabics and see who i can employ. . .
 
What about a rubber floor mat like what came stock in my K5???

I'm just guessing, but isn't the same available for Subs? Easy to clean, durable, spill (and kid) proof. Probably cheaper than carpet too.
 
you know iwas thinking about it but i figure the carpet will insulate heat and cold and isolate sound better.

the passenger area carpet it about 150. i can do the rear myself with outdoor carpet.

i guess i will just have to aquire my parts and make a pile until im ready to do the entire floor and seats.

i got a line on some chrysler minivan seats. . black leather. . . might be nice. . .
 
i ordered from lmctruck, and like the flooring, but i would not order it from there again because it said acc right on the box so i would order from auto custom carpets, and save a few bucks

I'm 99% sure that no matter where you order carpet from, it will be ACC carpet. There was another company, but ACC bought them out. It's a shame really, because the carpet from the other company (their name escapes me) was a better quality. So basically, just buy carpet from whoever sells it the cheapest.
 
I purchase my dye from Parasol Inc. and have had great luck with it on seats and plastic parts. I use their adhesion promoter for any hard plastic parts.
 
have you tried krylon fusion for hard plastics? which one works better do you think? I have used the fusion on the grille of my ranger (it was chaulky nasty faded black). It has held up for over a year and it looks perfect.

I have never used vinyl dye and i wonder if they are essentially the same thing.

I am not real familiar with Krylon, because I usually want my hard plastic pieces to match my seats and door panels. Most of the time, I have my colors custom-matched. I do know that you have to be real careful with what you use, because many so called dyes are merely thinned down lacquers. True vinyl dye penetrates the vinyl surface and truly dyes the vinyl instead of coating it.
 
ya thats the selling point of Krylon Fusion- it penetrates plastic instead of coats it.

they sound very similar. i may do a test panel
 
I did the same thing to my K5. I bought stuff for a steady 2-3 months before I started any teardown. If you want to try paint for your plastics, I bought some paint called SEM Colorcoat. It is the best stuff I have evr used, plus it has a matte finish so your panels will look OEM, not like you painted them. I beat up Ebay and Classic Industries when I redid my interior. I have nothing bad to say about them.
 
The last carpet I put into a K5 was my buddies 79. We just picked up a remnant from a local carpet place, and used sound deadening material below it. I believe in the passenger area he used some foam 3/8's pad. It isn't the most ideal, but the complete carpet only cost about $60, so much cheaper than ordering the molded carpet.

My plan is to do the cargo area this year, and it will be done with remnant carpet as well.

Edit: I will be doing the LMC sound deadening material and pad below the carpet, but it really isn't required.

Eastwood sells upholstery/plastic paint and a pre-cleaner for it. I've used both and it works very well. More expensive than Krylon, but I got the impression that their plastic paint was more for lawn furniture than anything else. Dupli-color also makes plastic/upholstery paint; it works well too and you can buy it at Pep Boys etc.

notice 3 adjustable headrests. . . 3 seatbelts (2008) that actually work with inertia reels. LATCH system for baby car seats, cup holders, and sick vinyl that is perforated in the middle. not the shiny kind. . . the kind that actually looks like leather. . .


now. . . i thought they would fold but they dont. . . do put them in anyways?

they are super comfy.
