I've got a 14FF with the old style spindle nut retaining ring, the type that has the little ears that you fold over into the notches in the spindle nut.

I used to have a 14FF that had the opposite style, it took a little square pin that slid in the nottch on the spindle and the notch on the inner part of the spindle nut and was secured with a type of snap ring.

The spindles on this current 14FF has the notch and I'm wanting to know if I can use the newer style spindle nut/ square pin/ snap ring vs. what's currently on there.

Just seems like a better way of securing things to me and easier in terms of disassembly/reassembly.

What years would the new style be used?

Lotsa stuff. If you want a specific example, my new-style axle came out of a 1997 G3500 express van (though the van axles have removable brake drums and the hubs are different, I believe the spindle nuts are the same as the later truck axles).
