A friend of mine got his 87 blazer running last weekend (new engine) so we took out. We were up in the hills and went down into a draw. Climbing out the other side we made it 3/4 of the way to the top and it just died. We get down to the bottom and after several minutes trying to start it, it fires up and runs great. No black smoke not loaded up. We repeat this three more times with the same result. On the fith attempt we try it in reverse and it climbs out no problem. The previous owner replaced the engine and got rid of the TBI. It now has a rebuilt Q-jet with mechanical pump. We are going to drop the tank and see if the electric pump for the TBI is still in there. Could this be the problem?

Could be, as soon as it stalled I would have popped the air cleaner and see if the accelerator pump was moving fuel.

I had a float set too low, and ONLY if I was really on the throttle hard for a long period of time would it start bucking from lack of fuel. 99% of the time it ran fine.

Float level is good. We were just crawling up the hill.

Vapor locking. That mech pump isn't designed to pull through a non running in tank pump and the in line filter on the frame. That is, if those items are still in place. And a long pull like that could have created just enough heat to cause it.

You would be better off running a stock TBI in tank pump through the stock lines and filter with a pressure regulator up near the carb with a return line back to the tank to ease pressure on the pump.

Better yet, put the TBI stuff back on.

Why would it go up in reverse without a problem? Gravity fed?

maybe the sock in the gas tank came lose and is causing a blockage?had this happen in a camaro i had once

...how much fuel is in the tank...?

If the tbi pump is in the tank can we remove it and still pick up fuel or do we need a new pick up from older tank?

Probably be "safer" to get a sending unit from an older rig, otherwise you'll have to cobble together some way to extend the pickup to the floor of the tank, keep it in place, and put a filter on it.

You MIGHT be able to sell a TBI sending unit/pump, to recoup some of your cost.

In theory, yeah. Trying to fix a problem like this over the internets is just brainstorming. My brain could only think of this as a reason it would vapor lock going uphill forwards and not backwards. :dunno: It's a plausible theory. :D

Well we are going to drop the tank tomorrow and see what he has.
