Hey fellas/ladies,

I'm going to leave for a road trip in about an hour and need to know which way the manual hub installs.

Between the two pictures below, which way should the outer gear be oriented?

Thanks!

i think it is a. try one way, and see if the hub locks. if not try the other way.

That's the thing -- they lock up both ways but I don't want to screw anything up by running the gear either too deep or too shallow on the axle.

when the outer cap goes on, does it need clearance for anything that the recessed space provides?

did you have both sides apart? if not, take the cap off the other side and look at it.

No, the manual hub part that pushes the gear inward only pushes on the outside of the gear, it doesn't interfere/interact with the teeth at all.

Unfortunately I replaced the wheel bearings on both sides so I installed them both as picture B without paying attention, just based on how I thought they would function correctly.

A. Not enough tooth engagement with B. :waytogo:

That's kinda what I was thinking, just need some confirmation to make me feel better about it :D Thanks for the feedback.

A. I rebuilt mine last week.

BTW, you made sure the first lockring with the little tab/post on it was situated properly too.. right? I almost overlooked that one!!

I sure did... I had to replace both the inner adjusting nuts and one of the locking washers/rings because whoever installed them before me must've not paid attention and just impact-wrenched them in there since both the little tabs were broken off the nuts that hold the washer, and one of the washers was cracked.
